Rainbow Six Extraction: Every Objective Type, Ranked

When you load into a mission in Rainbow Six Extraction, you're going to have three objectives to complete. Some of these are as simple as eliminating a bothersome Archaean. Others are far more complex. No matter what your superiors at REACT want you to do it's not going to be a walk in the park.

There are some objectives that you get excited to see when they pop up, while others make you groan. This list is going to take a look at all 13 objectives in Extraction and determine which ones are the best and which ones feel like an absolute chore.

13 No One Left Behind

This one gets put right at the bottom because if it appears, it means that your team royally screwed up. This objective only activates if a member of your team is knocked out and covered in stasis foam. You then need to haul their body over to the Extraction Zone so they can escape without being declared MIA. At that point, the incursion is pretty much over even if you haven't finished the first objective. You're down a teammate or perhaps even two teammates, and it's just not worth going on.

12 MIA Operator

This works similarly to No One Left Behind, although it's a tad different. This objective requires you to pull an MIA Operator out from a gooey Archaean Tree while the rest of the squad fires at Anchor Points that are feeding it energy. This tug of war can go on forever if your team isn't coordinated enough to shoot down the Anchor Points and Cells. When you eventually free your fallen comrade, you need to lug their body back to the Extraction Zone and that's about it. This objective also pops up when one of your Operators becomes MIA, and it's the only way to get them back. It's a little better than the previous objective because you haven't lost a player, but that dang tree can be annoying to tug on.

11 Rescue

Rescue requires you to save a REACT worker who somehow hasn't turned into a zombie despite being surrounded by Archies. Thankfully, they're not attached to any kind of parasitic tree structure, so it's a little easier to get them home safely. However, this worker is made out of tissue paper and constantly coughs, which alerts nearby enemies. So they're always at risk of either being killed or getting you killed. It's not an especially hard objective, but it boils down to being a glorified escort mission. And those always suck.

10 Triangulation

This one has you activating three terminals in a sequence to stop seismic tremors. It's not too hard, but the big problem is finding these stations. You need to turn on stations A, B, and C in that order, and you end up scrambling around looking for their locations. When you turn them on you then have a small amount of time to make a mad dash to each station. This one usually splits up your team as you all look for the terminals, and that's a recipe for disaster. To stick an objective that makes you run and make a lot of noise while potentially dividing everyone in a game that's mostly about stealth and teamwork seems kind of mean to be quite honest.

9 Nest Tracking

REACT wants you to stick tracking devices on Nests, but the Nests need to be dormant for this to work for some reason. That's not too big of a problem since you should be sneaking around anyway. But if one person makes a racket, then most of the Nests will probably get alerted. And if a Nest is alerted, then it's ineligible to have a tracker shoved into it. So if there happen to be loud, exploding enemies like Bloaters around, you'll probably going to wake up those Nests no matter what you do. And if all the Nests get alerted, you fail this objective. You can basically get screwed on this one if you run into the wrong enemy or if someone is running around firing an unsilenced weapon. Pretty lame.

8 Shutdown

To take out the Nutrient Node that keeps regenerating Nests, you need to go to the Extraction Point, grab foam infectors from a dispenser, and then place them on three spots around the Node. How this one goes depends on your teammates. If your team works together, you could all grab an injector and put them down at the same time to make this objective a cakewalk. Otherwise, you may find yourself having to walk to and from the dispenser to get all the injectors, which is a bit tedious.

7 Specimen

This objective is a little silly. You need to attract the attention of an elite Archaean, and then make them follow you back to the Extraction Zone without killing it. You then set off a gas trap that knocks them out so they can be brought back to the REACT base to be studied. Someone on the team generally needs to volunteer to be the bait while the rest follow and try not to distract the target so they can spring the trap. Depending on how strong this enemy is, there's a chance that you'll either accidentally kill it or it'll kill you. It may also lose focus and end up chasing the wrong person prolonging this game of cat and mouse. Not an especially hard objective, but it's a little finicky.

6 Serial Scan

You activate a scanner and from there, you need to go stand on some panels in three different areas. If anyone steps off of the panels for too long, the mission fails. And of course, this disturbs nearby enemies who begin to swarm you. As long as a member of your squad doesn't start the scanner before everyone else is ready, this can be a fun little defensive objective to tackle. The fact that you constantly have to change positions can cause a bit of enjoyable tension. Plus, it's one of the times that defensive Operators get to shine. Place some mines, claymores, or even Tachanka's LMG if you want. It requires setup and teamwork to survive, which is a core part of Extraction's gameplay.

5 Hunt

Do you want to just shoot something? Well then Hunt is likely one of your favorite objectives. It's simple really: you find three special Archies and murder them. This then draws out an elite Archie, which is pretty much a mini-boss fight. You then kill that and you win. This works best if you do it stealthily, but if you're tired of all the quiet stalking that you've been doing, you can go in guns a-blazing. Either way, just having to kill enemies makes Hunt feel like a breath of fresh air.

4 Decontamination

Unlike Nest Tracking, Decontamination wants you to destroy all the Nests you want. Specifically, the Abhorrent Nests that are colored a sickly shade of green. All you have to do is run around blowing up Nests until some weird thing called a Malignant Neoplasm opens up. You then stab that with your fancy science knife and call it a day. These Nests do emit some toxic gas and enemies will unsurprisingly swarm you once you start wrecking them. But while this can be challenging, being able to indiscriminately demolish Nests can be highly satisfying.

3 Sabotage

This one feels like something that was ripped out of Rainbow Six Siege and then altered to fit the world of Extraction. But hey, it works, so why knock it? You set up two bombs on some odd Archaean growths called Arch Spines. You then need to guard each of the bombs from incoming enemies until the timer runs out and the explosives detonate. If you want a prime example of the perfect objective for your defensive Operators, this is it. You need to set up whatever you've got and keep those nasty baddies from messing up your precious ticking timebombs. It can be fun, tactical, and stressful to ensure that both of them explode making this is a damn fine objective. It does raise the question of why these bombs need to be on a timer at all since you could just blow them both up right away and be done with it. But if we started asking questions about the nonsense in this game we'd be here all day.

2 Biopsy

What is Extraction all about? Stealth and teamwork. What do you need for a successful Biopsy mission? Stealth and teamwork. So it makes sense that this can be one of the more gratifying objective types. You need to find three elite Archies and perform takedown kills on them. Working with your squad to sneak around and stab these enemies in the back can be a lot of fun if you're all communicating. One person could throw a smoke grenade while the other goes in from the back. If an Archie becomes alerted, one player can distract it while another scores the takedown. This is an objective that feels like it takes full advantage of the tools that Extraction provides you with.

1 Gateway

There really couldn't be any other objective placed at the top of this list. Gateway is the main event of Rainbow Six Extraction. You touch a weird space orb that opens up a portal to some kind of hell dimension where you fight a boss that has taken the form and ability of one of the Operators. You then need to somehow kill it – which is hard since it has a gigantic health bar – while occasionally battling waves of other enemies. It kind of throws Extraction's whole modus operandi out the window since there's very little stealth involved and your whole team will likely be running around trying to stay alive rather than effectively working together. But it's an entertaining and difficult boss fight that makes you feel like you accomplished something when you succeed, so it's an easy choice for number one.
