Real-Life Squid Game Contestants Complain Of "Torment And Trauma"

Remember 2020? Things were pretty bad then, weren't they? The Pandemic was at its peak, we were all confined to our homes, anxiety was at an all-time high, and we weren't sure what was cake and what was not. Among the many things that became popular during that time – like baking and Zoom calls – was a Netflix show called Squid Game. It's unlikely that you haven't heard about it, but just in case – it's a Korean drama created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, that uses children's games as a device for social commentary and the class divide.

In the show, these children's games have fatal results, and bait those in society that are debt-ridden or just really need money with a lucrative honey-pot. So, after the commercial success of the show, Netflix decided to make a live-action game show based on the show – without the fatalities of course. Squid Game: The Challenge cast 456 people, who each have a chance of winning $4.56 million. While the producers obviously did not want the experience to have the same consequences as the show, some contestants have claimed that it caused them "torment and trauma".

According to a report by The Rolling Stone, some contestants have spoken out saying that the producers made them shoot under harsh conditions. “It was just the cruelest, meanest thing I’ve ever been through,” revealed a former contestant. “We were a human horse race, and they were treating us like horses out in the cold racing and [the race] was fixed.”

They weren't the only one who felt this way, as another one said, “All the torment and trauma we experienced wasn’t due to the game or the rigor of the game. It was the incompetencies of scale — they bit off more than they could chew.” The report also claimed that the contestants gave details that confirmed earlier reports that they were made to shoot in freezing conditions, and even required medical assistance due to the cold.

Netflix and the producers have already released a statement, saying that the medical situations were minor and that any allegations of the game being rigged are false.
