The one-time LucasArts mascots of Sam & Max are making a surprise return to video games, with a new VR title by creator Steve Purcell.
Sam & Max are returning to the world of video games in a new VR title that marks the 20th appearance of the cartoon duo in a game.
The game, subtitled This Time It’s Virtual, will be out in 2021 and will see you play as a new recruit to the Freelance Police, as you help Sam & Max to save the world and… goof around, probably.
Creator Steve Purcell is working as a consultant on the game design, art, and story, while David Nowlin returns as the voice of Sam and Dave Boat is Max – he’s not the normal Max voice actor but he did perform as him once in Poker Night 2.
Despite starting out as a little-known comic book series Sam & Max have had a surprisingly storied video game career, thanks to the fact that Steve Purcell worked as an artist for LucasArts during the late 80s and 90s.
As a result, Sam & Max got their first game in 1993 and subsequently Max, the rabbit thing, ended up cameoing in most LucasArts games thereafter – usually as a hidden secret. Which nowadays would make him a canon Star Wars character.
Telltale Games, who were formed by many ex-LucasArts staff, then produced three seasons of similar graphic adventures, beginning in 2006. That did finally seem to be the end of their video game career though, until now.
The new developer is HappyGiant, who doesn’t seem to have done anything but AR mobile games before, but the brief teaser does look promising, and we like the ‘Hello Miss’ joke at the end – so hopefully it will be as funny as the previous games.
