It’s been quite some time since we heard about what was going on with Samurai Shodown’s third season of DLC, but the wait has been well worth it. Alongside the surprise release of The Last Blade: Beyond The Destiny on the Switch eShop tonight, SNK announced that the next season for its premier fighting title will be getting a crossover character from its lesser-known franchise.
For those not up on their history of SNK, the company was the prime rival to Capcom during the ’90s and was responsible for a number of well-received arcade classics. The most prominent happens to be The King of Fighters, but there was also Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Shodown, and The Last Blade.
With the successful release of Samurai Shodown’s reboot last year on PS4 and Xbox One, fans have been clamoring for other series to receive the same treatment. One happens to be The Last Blade, another fighting title that takes place in a similar setting to Samurai Shodown. Many consider The Last Blade 2 on the Neo Geo to be SNK’s greatest title, so it only makes sense to see some representation in the company’s latest game.

We don’t know which fighter will be getting added to Samurai Shodown, but director Hayato Konya says, “they’re someone the fans absolutely adore.” If I knew more about both series, I might be able to give you some ideas as to whom that would be.
Still, it’s an exciting time for fans as this could mean good things for the future. It also follows a similar plan to what Capcom is doing with Street Fighter V’s last DLC season, which includes a crossover character with Capcom’s Rival Schools series. Could the next-generation consoles get belated Rival Schools and Last Blade sequels?
I might be getting ahead of myself, but I like what SNK is doing here. With COVID having turned development upside across the globe, the best way to give a shoutout to fans and show some love for an underrepresented series is by making some DLC right now. It might not ever grow into a new sequel, but at least SNK still cares.
