After officially confirming PS Plus would be getting a revamp, the time is almost upon us. The new tiered version of PS Plus will officially be rolled out in Asia next week, and then in other parts of the world throughout June. Despite the launch now being right around the corner, new details continue to come to light. Including new information regarding the ability to access games from older PlayStation consoles without actually needing to sign up for Premium.
Premium will be the highest-priced tier of the new PS Plus, and with it you will get access to a library of PS1, PS2, and PSP games, a privilege not afforded to the Extra and Essential tiers. PlayStation revealed a huge chunk of the classic games that will be available through the service earlier this week. However, in the same blog post, it was also revealed some titles from the PS1 and PSP libraries won't require a Premium subscription to access.
In fact, you technically won't need PS Plus at all. “When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can head to PlayStation Store and download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version,” the post reads. That means if you bought digital copies of any of the PS1 and PSP games coming to Premium on PS3 or PSP, you will be able to download a copy free of charge on your PS4 or PS5 once the new PS Plus service launches in your part of the world.
The post adds that even if you haven't bought a digital copy of any of the games in the past, some of them will be available to buy individually through the PS Store. No word yet on which of the games announced for Premium will be sold separately. Good news for anyone who has bought them digitally in the past or wants to buy them soon without committing to a subscription. Especially since many of the titles will have improved interfaces, allow you to save at any time, and also include a rewind feature.
There has been a certain degree of backlash since the list of games was revealed earlier this week. It should be noted that the games revealed so far don't include everything coming to the service. For starters, none of the PS2 games being revived for Premium have been named yet. There will also be more games added to both the Extra and Premium tiers every month, similar to the way Xbox adds titles to Game Pass.
