Jenova Chen's indie studio thatgamecompany has gained fame for its affecting, vividly imagined games with titles such as Flower, flOw, and especially the highly acclaimed Journey making their mark on critics and the general gaming audience alike. 2019's Sky: Children of the Light has been particularly popular, earning more than 160 million downloads across mobile platforms and Nintendo Switch, and now the game has inspired an animation project.
Today, attendees at Tokyo's Anime Japan 2022 got a first look at an animation project currently in development by the indie studio. The trailer showed off the whimsical landscape, flora and fauna familiar to players of Sky: Children of the Light, along with concept art and storyboard animation that revealed new characters that expands the game's universe. The one-minute video promised more to come at its ending.
Alongside the first look at the animation project based on Sky: Children of the Light's lore and world, thatgamecompany announced several other updates, including new content for the game. These include Days of Bloom, a spring-themed floral game event, which will also feature a behind-the-scenes video at the start of the seasonal event, and Season of Performance was announced for an April 11 launch. This latter update will introduce the Village of Dreams' community theatre that will allow players to connect and share their creative passions via an upcoming 'Shared Memories' feature.
Sky's global community project announcements revealed Sky Assemblies, which will mean Sky fans around the world will have the chance to host their own community events to connect with each other via in-person gatherings, and Sky Crafting Corner is a new community initiative aimed at celebrating fans' arts and crafts based on Sky's seasonal events.
A 'Journey So Far' video collected some of the best moments from the studio as well as those created by Sky communities. Finally, Japan's official celebrity Sky influencer was introduced. Yuki Kaji, the Japanese actor and singer known for his work on Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan was unveiled as the game's official celebrity ambassador and influencer partner in Japan.
