Yesterday, a PlayStation store page for Spider-Man 2 launched before quickly closing down, leading many to believe that we would be getting news on its release date soon. In a way, they were right, as Jamie Mayer wrote on her personal website, "Currently on the writing team for the upcoming Spider-Man 2 (release fall 2023) and Wolverine games (release TBD) for Insomniac Games/Sony Interactive".
Up until now, the only date we'd had is the vague 2023, but Mayer's website gives us a less vague window of Fall 2023. In all likelihood, that means we won't see it until late next year unless it's delayed further out into 2024 or beyond. However, Mayer was quick to change her about me page after many noticed this detail and began sharing it on Twitter.
Insomniac's first Spider-Man game launched on September 7, 2018, while Miles Morales launched in November, 2020, so there's a track record of late-year releases. Given how early next year is stacked, with the Dead Space remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the Resident Evil 4 remake, Dead Island 2, Diablo 4, Street Fighter 6, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Final Fantasy 16, it might be for the best that its holding off.
Earlier this month, Venom actor Tony Todd also spoke about Spider-Man 2, likening the scope to Miles Morales' opening chase with Rhino through a shopping mall. While vague on details, he did say that the game was "mind-blowing", teasing that "Venom doesn't play". We know very little about what's going on in Spider-Man 2, or what Venom and Kraven are really up to, but, with a string of leaks, teasers, and rumours, perhaps we'll get an update from Sony directly soon enough.
