We’re just over a month away from the release of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, the spiritual sequel to Battle for Bikini Bottom. THQ confirmed the game’s release at The Game Awards along with a load of new gameplay footage that showcased the many worlds SpongeBob will travel to in order to save his friends. And now, THQ’s latest trailer reveals just how SpongeBob is going to do it.
It’s not just Gary that’s become a boss enemy in The Cosmic Shake. Sandy Cheeks takes up arms in the martial arts world, Mr. Krabs is a robber baron in the wild west world, and a prehistoric Pearl Krabs cries her eyes out in the stone age level. One wonders why salty water would be damaging to SpongeBob, who lives his entire life under the sea, but such is the world of cartoons-turned-games.
Anyway, we've already seen angry Gary in the THQ 2022 Showcase trailer, so we know that boss fight involves cutting Gary off from his candy supply. That'll require going around an arena and taking down candy vending machines, ultimately leading to a showdown against Gary on the arena floor. How that fight ends will have to be discovered in-game.
Mr. Krabs, meanwhile, is on a train that SpongeBob has to fight his way onto and through. That looks like it'll be a lengthy grind, much like Sandy's fight, which will likely involve waves of enemies and several wooden wheels–one of which has Sandy running inside like a giant hamster wheel even though she's a squirrel.
The medieval level inspired by the "Dunces and Dragons" episode features a witch who appears to be the sweet old lady from the episode "Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up is Go!" Yet another deep cut for a game that appears to be full of very deep SpongeBob cuts.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake arrives on January 31. Pre-order now to receive several referential costumes.
