Valve’s first foray into the console market has clearly been a success, since it has long-term plans for future Steam Deck products.
Although there are no public sales figures, it’s safe to assume that the Steam Deck has been a big success for Valve. The Steam website lists the console as amongst its top sellers and it’s been almost impossible to get hold of since it launched this February.
So it’s not surprising to learn that Valve already has plans to continue the Steam Deck brand. Not just with revised models, but entirely new versions of the console.
Valve revealed this in a 50-page booklet made in preparation for the console’s launch in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.
It primarily serves as an introduction to Valve and Steam, as well as behind the scenes info on the console’s creation, with talk of the Steam Deck’s future reserved for the final pages.
‘Steam Deck represents the first in a new category of Steam handheld gaming PCs. In the future, Valve will follow up on this product with improvements and iterations to hardware and software, bringing new versions of Steam Deck to market,’ it reads.
It outright calls it a ‘multi-generational product line,’ so apparently Valve intends on releasing new models for as long as they’re profitable. It’s even asking fans what they’d like to see in a Steam Deck 2, or whatever it ends up being called.
As a reminder, the Steam Deck still isn’t readily available. You can’t just order one; you have to put down a reservation and wait for an email to tell you that there’s one available for purchase.
The booklet adds that the Steam Deck’s user interface will eventually come to PC desktops as a new version of the Big Picture mode that lets you play your games through a TV.
This is the best way to do this until Valve releases the dock that lets you connect your Steam Deck directly to your TV, just like the Nintendo Switch.
You can read an English version of the booklet for yourself via Steam’s website.
Another recent Valve announcement is that it’s revamping its Steam mobile app. It’s currently in beta, but the aim is to provide a complete revamp.
‘We’ve rebuilt the app on a new framework and modernized the design,’ Valve explains on its website.
‘You’ll still be able to browse the store, get Steam Guard codes, and confirm trades, but now the app comes with QR code sign in, smarter notifications, an improved Library, and multi account support.’
This could be in response to the middling user reviews across both Apple and Google Play, where it has average scores of 2.3 and 3.5, respectively.
