Still no sign of Spider-Man as Avengers teases year 2 roadmap

To coincide with the game’s first anniversary, Square Enix has promised a hint at the next year of content later this week.

With the release of the Black Panther expansion, Avengers players are officially caught up with everything that was promised in the game’s initial content roadmap. Whatever comes next, in terms of story and playable characters, is a complete mystery.

It won’t be like that for much longer, however. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have confirmed via the official website that an updated roadmap will be shared on Wednesday, September 8.

While this roadmap will only cover what’s left to come in 2021, a State of the Game blog post will also be published which should provide some glimpse at what 2022 may hold in store.

For the time being, the only piece of Avengers content we know about is the inclusion of Spider-Man. He was announced as a PlayStation exclusive character last year, before the game’s release, and Crystal Dynamics promises that he will arrive before the end of this year. Hopefully, the new roadmap will provide a clearer release window.

Of course, this isn’t the only thing Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are doing to celebrate the anniversary. There are some pieces of free content available to download from the in-game store, namely an anniversary bundle that comes with a new Black Panther themed nameplate, a new Iron Man costume, and some consumable items.

There are also flashback bundles centred around certain characters that come with related cosmetics. Specifically, there are bundles for Black Panther, Black Widow, Thor, and one that combines Captain America and Ms. Marvel. These and the anniversary bundle are only available this week.

Anyone who has completed every campaign (that’s the main story and all three DLC expansions) will receive an anniversary nameplate as well. This will only be available until September 16. More details can be found on the website.

Avengers has had something of a rough life so far. Aside from it not meeting sales expectations at launch, the player base notably dipped not long afterwards.

The first major DLC expansion was also delayed (although that’s probably mostly the fault of the pandemic) and the game has faced regular criticism from its players, whether it be for charging for certain skins or making the act of levelling up characters slower.

Also, none of the updates have really addressed the lack of supervillains and the fact that most of the ordinary cannon fodder enemies are just mindless robots.

Marvel’s Avengers is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia.
