Gamers have less than a week to prepare before the next big Apex Legends event begins on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Developers Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that the Dark Depths will open next week and allow gamers to unlock new skins and explore a new Arenas map, named Habitat.

For those who might not have jumped into Apex Legends in a while, Arenas is a game mode added last year and is a permanent mode.

This means that even when limited time events occur, the mode itself is never removed from the game.

Arenas drastically reduces the squad count from 20 to just 2, providing a 3v3 combat setup, where teams face off against the enemy without any other squads coming to crash the party over multiple rounds.

Another big difference is that before every round starts, you’ll use materials earned during the previous round to get and upgrade weapons, as well as ordnance and healing supplies.

And for fans of the new mode, the Dark Depths will be adding the next map to fight on, introducing the tiny island of Storm Point to the game.

A message from Respawn provides more on the new location, telling fans: “Storm Point is just one of many islands in the New Antillia archipelago.

“Habitat 4 is one of the smallest islands in the chain, and is best known as a Leviathan breeding ground. Early IMC research groups were surprised to find that a large population of local Leviathans gravitated toward the island, and designated Habitat 4 as an ethology base to study the creatures’ behavior. It’s been over a century since then, and while the IMC is gone, the gentle giants they studied here remain.

“Habitat 4 was inspired by Leviathans and how it would feel to fight in their breeding grounds. It represents our vision of an arena established in a natural environment, while holding true to the tentpoles of arena design. With that being said, one of Habitat 4’s key features is a large waterfall. Through the passage of time it has eroded the landscape, forming trenches and terraces of varied elevation. Making this island a paradise for slides and quick getaways.”

The surprise new Apex Legends event was announced today and Respawn confirmed that Dark Depths will start on January 11, meaning fans have less than a week to prepare.
