The Anacrusis is a game full of style and flair. Its plethora of items, guns, and perks make it an intense first-person shooter that, while still a little undercooked, is nevertheless a lot of fun. However, while blasting aliens to shreds and gallivanting around a gloriously garish '60s themed spaceship is a lot of fun, it helps to come a little prepared for the party.
From grenades that explode into a shower of goo to one that pulls aliens together before ripping them apart like melted mozzarella, there are a huge number of fantastic items for you to use against your foes. However, you don’t have the time to test out each grenade and healing item when there are hundreds of aliens breathing down your neck. So, going in knowing which ones to pick up and which to leave by the wayside is a good idea.
7 Health Scanner
The Health Scanner is a priceless and precious item in The Anacrusis. It is the equivalent of a health pack in other games and serves as the primary way of healing yourself and others. At the start of each mission there will be one waiting for you, but once you've used it up, you're reliant on others healing you or finding a spare one lying around.
The Health Scanner is useful for obvious reasons, especially paired with a perk to boost it. Without it, you might as well not bother playing. If you see one of these lying around the various multicolored hallways and cabin rooms, then you should absolutely pick it up. Its also worth mentioning that hoarding these is a bad idea. While you can only have one at a time, keeping it to yourself for a time when you're on low health isn't advisable if a teammate could use it at that moment. Always prioritize your team over yourself in The Anacrusis, or else suffer another onslaught of aliens when they inevitably die.
6 Health Booster
The way recovering health works in video games has always been strange. Whacking someone with a white bag or injecting someone with a clear-colored serum tends to do the trick, and there's a very good chance you've stopped questioning it. Well, should you not have the Health Scanner in The Anacrusis, then be prepared to inject yourself with a syringe in the hopes of curing a limp.
The Health Booster isn't as effective as the Health Scanner. In fact, it barely heals you at all. Its primary purpose is to remove the limp – or more accurately slow movement speed – you receive when your health drops too low. Without it, a good portion of your playthrough will be extremely arduous and slow, with your character moving at a snail's pace. While a Health Scanner is preferable, a Health Booster will do in a pinch.
5 Impact Grenade
The Impact Grenade is by far the most traditional grenade in The Anacrusis. You throw it, it explodes and a lot of aliens die. It's fairly self-explanatory. However, its power and usefulness should not be understated. When you're facing off against a large horde of aliens, tossing this into the middle of them will likely clear them out.
While there are certainly grenades you should prioritize over the Impact Grenade, and certainly ones that are more fun to use, the Impact Grenade's familiarity and trustworthiness to get the job done is a valued asset. You know exactly what it'll do and how effective it'll be. Relying on this as a fallback tactic is a very good idea and will get you out of almost any difficult situation.
4 Vortex Grenade
While a lot of the grenades that feature in The Anacrusis tend to adhere mostly to the laws of physics and reality, there are a few that embrace its bizarre and wonderful sci-fi aesthetic. The best example of this is the Vortex Grenade, a brutally powerful piece of equipment that should you find must be used almost immediately.
Once thrown, the Vortex Grenade will suck in any nearby aliens and pull them up into the air. They will float there for a little while before being tossed into the distance. This grenade is therefore not only incredible for pushing hordes of aliens away from you, but for killing them rather quickly. During the brief moments they’re all together, you can fire into the clump of alien bodies to pick them off all at once. It’s a devastatingly effective grenade and at times far more useful than even the best guns the game has to offer.
3 Shield Grenade
The Shield Grenade is one of the few non-offensive grenades at your disposal. Instead of blowing off the heads of your foes or engulfing them in a searing blaze, it covers you and your teammates in a protective bubble. This shield is practically impenetrable and will stop the majority of aliens from reaching you. The only one you don't stand a chance again, inside the shield or not, is the brute.
Having the Shield Grenade handy is useful for a number of reasons. If a teammate needs to revive another, then throwing this down to cover them will ensure they are revived safely. If you're being surrounded by an unstoppable force, this will likely save you from an untimely death. And should you be preparing for an incoming wave of enemies, preemptively placing this down will protect you in advance. There are so many great reasons to use the Shield Grenade, and it is absolutely one worth keeping in your arsenal.
2 Incendiary Grenade
Not unlike the Impact Grenade, the Incendiary Grenade exists for one reason and one reason only: to cause as much chaos and carnage as possible. Once thrown, this will explode and rain fire down on your foes. It will smother the ground in a thick layer of smoke and fire and engulf anything that should walk through it.
While the Impact Grenade and similarly devastating items are effective at clearing out clumps of enemies, the Incendiary Grenade will practically wipe out anything trying to reach you. Combined with a well-timed Shield or Goo grenade, and you'll be practically unstoppable. This is absolutely a grenade you should prioritize over others and use when the time is right.
1 Goo Grenade
The Goo Grenade may seem like a fairly average item at first. Its primary purpose is to slow enemies down whenever they walk across it, so it's best deployed in doorways or spots where large groups of aliens seem to be dropping into. However, when used correctly and in conjunction with perks, the Goo Grenade becomes the most powerful piece of equipment in your loadout.
Once deployed, the goo from the Goo Grenade can be set alight by firing the Laser Rifle at it. This essentially turns it into an incendiary grenade and can quickly kill off a large group of enemies. With the Healing Goo perk, it can become a healing field for you and your teammates, and with the Defensive Goo perk, it can buff your team and make you far more resilient. There are plenty of things you should know before playing The Anacrusis, but perhaps one of the most important is to use the Goo Grenade. While on its own it’s nothing special, in combination with these other elements it is incredibly useful.
