More news on HBO's The Last Of Us live-action series. Today, Henry and Sam were both confirmed to feature in the show and we even have names for both roles.
In a report from IGN, Lamar Johnson will play the older Henry and Keivonn Woodard will play the younger Sam. Fans of the game will recall Henry and Sam as the two brothers fleeing Pittsburgh from ruthless hunters. The two pair up with Ellie and Joel to defeat the hunters and bond over philosophy and a shared love of motorcycles, only to have tragedy strike soon after.
According to the report, things will be a little different the HBO series compared to the game. Spoilers are ahead, so skip this next section if you want to watch The Last Of Us with totally fresh eyes.
Instead of being encountered in Pittsburgh as in the game, Ellie and Joel will team up with Henry and Sam in Kansas City where the two are "hiding from a revolutionary movement seeking vengeance." We know nothing else about the plot, but fans of the game will have a pretty good idea of what happens.
We know courtesy of a recent interview with Ellie star Bella Ramsey that HBO is being true to the games with its live-action series. "It very much follows the emotional beats of the game, and it’s very respectful of the game and honors the game," she said, "but [the live-action series adaptation] brings a new life into it. It explores different avenues that weren’t explored so much in the game. I do think people are going to love it."
There might be a few departures from the game, too. Also cast today were Graham Greene and Elaine Miles who will guest star as Marlon and Florence, a married couple surviving in post-apocalyptic Wisconsin.
Johnson’s previous credits include the 2018 drama The Hate U Give, a film about police brutality against Blacks in America. Woodard doesn’t have any previous credits.
HBO’s The Last Of Us is tentatively scheduled for "early 2023."
