The second anniversary of The Last Of Us 2 is fast-approaching. In 2020, the long-awaited sequel took us back to Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic world, and the number of awards it has raked in since would suggest it is objectively one of the best games ever made. The story is intense, the setting is bleak, and the foes you face are downright terrifying. Which is why news that the game almost featured a playable dance sequence is rather surprising.
As reported by GamesRadar, YouTuber Speclizer and content creator Angel-gbc revealed there was once a plan to let players dance in-game while performing a deep-dive of TLOU 2's files. The video shows an incredibly early version of Jackson, the town in which Joel and Ellie have found refuge and the second chapter of their journey together begins.
Even though it is a very early build, you can still make out locations that would make it into the finished game. The park where Ellie and Dina have a snowball fight, and the hall where the scrapped dance sequence would have taken place. Ellie and Dina do dance in the finished game, but it's a cutscene rather than a moment players are invited to actively be a part of. The clip also shows Ellie with a different hairstyle to the one she sports during that scene in the final game.
The dance sequence isn't the only cut content Speclizer and Angel-gbc shed some light on. Another sequence from much later in the sequel during which Ellie has to hunt and kill a boar is detailed. That has actually been discussed by Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and Troy Baker, the voice of Joel, on the latter's podcast. The sequence was part of the game for so long that it was actually playable at one point, but ultimately scrapped due to pacing and production.
It might be a while until we see anything resembling The Last Of Us Part 3, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty for fans of the first two games to be excited about in the much nearer future. HBO's TV adaptation launches in 2023, the multiplayer section of the sequel that was possibly held back to launch as a standalone game could still be in the works, and a PS5 remake of the first game also appears to be on the horizon.
