The Witcher is being remade. Although still in early development from Polish studio Fool's Theory, the hope is that using an established engine like Unreal Engine 5 will make the job of remaking 2007's The Witcher easier (although NightDive will be the first to say that's not always the case).
CD Projekt Red offered few details in its announcement last month, but we now have slightly more to go on today thanks to the company's third-quarter earnings report. In the PDF released by CD Projekt, The Witcher Remake will be a "story-driven, single-player, open-world RPG — a modern reimagining of 2007's The Witcher."
Open world are the key words in the report. The 2007 original was largely a level-based affair, with Geralt stumbling from location to location in and around the Temerian capital of Vizima. It's a place you can briefly visit in The Witcher 3, but large swathes are closed off in the original.
Based on the wording above, we can likely expect Vizima to be greatly expanded upon in the remake. If The Witcher 3 is any indication, we'll potentially be able to travel all over the country of Temeria.
The only other thing we have to share about The Witcher remake is that Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle still hasn't been contacted to re-record any lines, although he said he'd "be there in an instant" if CD Projekt Red asked. This leads us to believe that the game will largely re-use voice lines from the 2007 game, but if Fool's Theory is to add more quests and content to the remake, one assumes that Cockle will get a call soon enough.
If you can't wait for more Witcher, there's at least going to be a current-gen update for The Witcher 3 that will add a graphical overhaul and a whole host of new features to the 2015 classic. Expect a photo mode, a new quick-cast mode, and revamped armor and costumes that'll line up with the Netflix live-action show.
