TheGamer’s Pride Month Picks 2022: The Owl House, Elder Scrolls Online, Jennifer’s Body, And So Much More

Pride Month is over. Now all LGBTQ+ people around the globe must retreat back into their underground shelters until the rainbow sun rises again. It’s a hard existence, but it was nice ruling the world for a few weeks and celebrating both how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go in order to achieve equality.

We’re a fruity bunch here at TheGamer, so of course we took the opportunity to write about queer representation across games, films, television shows, and more that mean a lot to us. If you happened to miss any of our fabulous musings, we’ve compiled all the sweet, sweet content into one place for your reading pleasure. Without further delay, let’s get stuck in.

The Last Of Us Part 2's Sapphic Romance Remains A Blockbuster Triumph – To kick things off we explored the queer relationship between Ellie and Dina in Naughty Dog’s beloved sequel and how it depicts a sweet sapphic bond amidst the apocalypse that feels real in all the best ways.

If You Think Arcane Is Straight You Watched It Wrong – Caitlyn and Vi are so smitten with one another throughout the masterful League of Legends animated series that you’d have to be in possession of some truly special brainworms to view them as nothing more than gals being pals. I also break up with my besties in the rain and gently caress their cheeks in bed. Very straight.

She-Ra's Catradora Remains The Greatest Romance In Animation Dreamworks and ND Stevenson crafted something beautiful with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It was so influential in its queer storytelling that this girl has two tattoos dedicated to the series – the Catradora brainrot really is that bad. The two girls, at least in my eyes, remain the most heartfelt and convincing queer pairing to emerge in decades.

We Need More Bi Characters Like Dragon Age’s Isabela – News editor Rhiannon Bevan delves into the character of Isabela from Dragon Age and how she remains a bisexual character who was well ahead of her time, with the medium still in desperate need of more personalities like her.

Here's To The Modders Making Mass Effect Gay Editor-in-chief Stacey Henley explores how for years modders have been reclaiming the Mass Effect trilogy’s lack of compelling gay romances by adding and building on them with their own devices. Pour one out for our gay space homies and all they’ve done for the series’ representation.

The Owl House Changed The Landscape Of Queer Animation Dana Terrace’s fantastic animated series features queer characters and themes that have pushed the craft forward and enraptured millions with representation that feels real, earned, and so damn fruity.

Doctor Who Will Mean So Much To A New Generation Of Queer Kids With the return of Russell T Davies as showrunner, Doctor Who is poised to embrace a new generation of queer viewers with characters, themes, and a clear message that showcases how everyone is welcome aboard the Tardis.

Our Flag Means Death Is A Gay Romance For The Ages – Stede Bonnet and Edward Blackbeard are two chaotic pirate boys who are desperately in love, and seeing their relationship unfold throughout the show’s first season has been a delight. Now bring on the second and let us see them going on cool dates across the seven seas.

Jennifer's Body Is The Glorious Lesbian Trash We Deserve – Jennifer’s Body is arguably the most Stacey Henley movie I’ve ever seen, so of course we revisited the queer horror classic that has gained a cult following in the years since its underappreciated debut.

Where Are Gaming’s Trans Woman Heroes? – Stacey Henley examines the welcome presence of characters like Tell Me Why’s Tyler Ronan and The Last of Us Part 2’s Lev while also asking when we’ll be treated to trans women of a similar calibre taking the spotlight.

Stardew Valley Remains A Place Of Discovery For Queer Players – The farming simulator allows the player to be anyone and do anything across its idyllic town, with the game long taking on a life of its own that queer players have embraced as a place to find themselves and fulfil queer fantasies that reality might not be ready for just yet.

How Fire Emblem's Edelgard Taught Me To Reject Compulsive Heterosexuality – Bonnie Lynch examines how Fire Emblem: Three Houses and the character of Edelgard allowed her to embrace her lesbian identity and reject a society that long expects us to abide by tired heteronormative ideas.

There Is No Such Thing As Perfect Queer Representation We have made massive strides in recent years when it comes to LGBTQ+ stories, characters, and themes, but the real beauty of this progress often lies within its own inherent imperfection.

Studio Elan Is The Master Of Sapphic Visual Novels – Highway Blossoms and Heart of the Woods are just a few of the titles from this small studio that continues to push the visual novel genre forward with gorgeous examples of wholesome sapphic romance.

Parvati And The Importance Of Asexuality Stacey Henley touches on The Outer Worlds’ Parvati and how more games should seek to embrace such brilliant examples of asexuality.

Kingdom Hearts And The Romantic Potential Of Sora And Riku News lead George Foster delves into a fan favourite romance between Sora and Riku that Kingdom Hearts desperately needs to make canon. These boys are far more than guys being dudes.

What The Elder Scrolls Online Pride Parade Means To Its Players – News and photo editor James Troughton speaks to the MMO community and how its yearly pride parade has long been a place for fans to come together and celebrate who they are.

As a team we are diverse and proud of who we are when it comes to gender and sexuality, so will never stop when it comes to covering the LGBTQ+ media we love, admire, and hope to critique in order to do our part in furthering representation. That was our plan throughout this past Pride Month, to bring attention to how far we’ve come and the hope that you’d come along for the ride and celebrate with us. With any luck, we succeeded.
