While you’ll no longer be able to buy games on the PSP itself, PSP games will still be available via the PS3 and PS Vita stores.
Earlier this year, Sony announced it intends to shut down the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita, a move which would’ve rendered over a hundred games inaccessible or, at least, very difficult to acquire.
This caused enough of a stink that Sony wound up backtracking, sparing the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita storefronts. The PSP, however, was not so lucky and today is officially the final day you can purchase digital games from it.
What it doesn’t mean is that those PSP games will be permanently lost to the ether. Sony has updated its website to say that PSP content will remain available to purchase on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores.
‘You’ll still be able to purchase and play PSP content that is available on the PS3 and PS Vita stores. However, you’ll no longer be able to make purchases via the in-game store for PSP content,’ reads the notice.
Previously it was thought that several digital-only PSP games would be lost forever but given Sony’s statement they should still be available via the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores, since there’s no mention of any exceptions to PSP content that can’t be accessed through those storefronts.
As another reminder, any content you have already purchased from the PSP store can be redownloaded, so it’s not like Sony is taking away the games you’ve bought. Any PSP games bought via the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores can then be downloaded onto the PSP, through the download list.
While something of a compromise, and a small victory for video game preservationists, it remains to be seen for how much longer Sony intends to keep the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores running.
