Ubisoft Montreal Taking Over Development Of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake After Delays

Ubisoft has just announced a change in developer for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai will no longer co-develop the remake, and instead, Ubisoft Montreal is taking over.

"The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal, the very birthplace of the epic Sands of Time trilogy," the French publisher wrote on the official Prince of Persia Twitter account. "This decision is an important step and the team, building upon work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it's ready."

The Sands of Time Remake seems to be suffering from a rocky development. After announcing the remake in 2020, Ubisoft drew criticism after the trailer made it seem like the remade game was barely an upgrade over the original version on the PS2. Ubisoft took this criticism to heart and delayed The Sames of Time Remake to March 2021 in order to improve its visual fidelity. This then became an indefinite delay, and then finally a 2022 release window.

Last October, Ubisoft released a curious update to remind us that The Sands of Time Remake was still in development, but didn’t provide us with an updated release date. Today’s update similarly makes no mention of a release date or even the fact the game is still scheduled to arrive this year. It should be noted, however, that when publishers change developers, it typically results in delays.

A new report is suggesting that there might be another Prince of Persia on the way. A 2.5D Prince of Persia will apparently go back to the series' roots, drawing inspiration from the Ori titles for a platforming adventure game starring the titular Prince. Expect Ubisoft to make an announcement on this title later this summer.
