Aardman Animations is best known for their work on Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run, and various other stop-motion films and TV shows, but they also make games too. And now it looks like they're going to create a brand-new game using a brand-new IP.
As noted by TechRadar, several job postings on Aardman's website reveal the studio is hiring for an unannounced game. "We’re working on an incredible, brand-new IP with a major publisher," writes Aardman, noting that it'll be a "mad, open-world 3D action-adventure."
The game has just started pre-production with a working prototype. Aardman is hiring a narrative/level designer to help "flesh it out into a full game."
”We’ll be scoping out the size and structure of our world, the player journey from end to end and the way we implement and explore our core, open-ended mechanics," Aardman adds.
Whoever gets the job will tell the game's story "in the most compelling and immersive way possible using a range of narrative tools." Documentation and notation will be crucial, as will partnering with other level designers, writers, and programmers.
We don't know much else about this game but it'll likely be made in Unreal Engine. The ad lists Unreal and Unity engine experience as required, but then lists Unreal again under "desirable skills."
The fixed-term contract starts in March with some remote work expected due to the pandemic. Applications are due before January 31.
Aardman might have more than one game in the works. The studio announced in late 2020 that it was partnering with Bandai Namco to create another new IP. We haven't heard anything since then, so it's possible this is the "major publisher" mentioned in the job ad. Or it might be that Aardman has two games on the go, and we'll find out about this other major publisher at a later date.
