There seems to be a new genre emerging. Games where you slide through a level using heart-palpitating parkour mechanics like Mirror's Edge while shooting demons in the head like its Doom Eternal all while racing against the clock. Neon White was the first game that really exemplified this runner shooter genre, and now we have Warstride Challenges to add to this growing list.
Warstride Challenges is an asynchronous multiplayer shooter where you run around a level killing demons as fast as you possibly can. You traverse each level using multiple movement mechanics like sliding, jumping, and a grappling hook while shooting demons with a variety of firearms. You've also got a force push-like Shockwave skill and a Stomp ability that can kill multiple demons at once without using any ammunition.
In a strange throwback, Warstride also features a bunnyhop mechanic that's been combined with time dilation. Jump to go fast–very fast–and then use the slow-mo key in midair to line up your shots.
But Warstride isn't just about killing demons fast–it's also about killing demons faster than your friends. Warstride's Nemesis system lets you compete against friends, enemies, or even streamers, displaying a ghost in-game for you to play against. If you prefer your runs to be unhaunted, a simple leaderboard will let you see how to stack up on the world stage.
Live multiplayer options are planned for the future, so there's a real chance Warstride Challenges could become an esports staple.
The final release has 180 levels planned, but you can try eight of them thanks to a free demo courtesy of Steam Next Fest. Each level offers unique challenges and beating all of them unlocks a secret "long level" for exceptional replayability (for a demo, anyway).
Developer Dream Powered Games is also giving away prizes for top scores players earn via the Next Fest demo. Join the community Discord and submit your best time to be entered into a raffle for a free copy of Warstride Challenges. You can also enter by submitting feedback or by streaming the game during Next Fest.
Warstride Challenges first plans to release on Steam in early 2022, but it’ll be coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 later on.
