GameCentral readers imagine what their favourite games are going to look like on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, from Fable 2 to Resident Evil 8.
This week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Gifford, who asked you to imagine your ideal next gen sequel. Take any game or franchise that already exists and imagine it for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. How would it differ from current versions and how would it take advantage of the superior graphics and faster load times?
Many imagined the obvious follow-ups like God Of War, Forza, and Horizon Zero Dawn, but there was lots of other hopeful talk about less certain sequels, such as XCOM 3 and a new Dishonored.
God of console war
The next God Of War is going to be incredible, there’s no question. The last one is one of the best games of the whole generation in just about everyway so have a sequel on the PlayStation 5 is going to be out of the world. I’m expecting a much bigger world, doesn’t have to be open world exactly, but with none of the constraints and loading tricks that Mark Cerny was on about in his talk (that was the only bit I found interesting).
I’m also hoping for lots of ordinary mortals wandering about. Crowds are still pretty rare in games, for obvious reason, but Assassin’s Creed always tries with them and I’d love to see what a next gen game can do to portray a proper bustling city.
God Of War has always been obsessed with scale and giants and we only got glimpses of this in the last one, mostly from just dead bodies so I can’t wait from some epic boss battles. I don’t think there’s any hint as to when the game will be out but I’m hoping it’ll be something Sony will announce this year.

Next gen dogs
This is an interesting question, because there are lots of obvious answers and yet in terms of game names, but no clue at all as to what the games will be like. My personal pick would be Fable 3, as it seems Microsoft are going to push that really hard and try and finally make their own Zelda equivalent. They don’t really do action adventures/role-playing lite games and that’s what Fable has always been.
But Fable has always been… not great. To be honest I only played the second one, which is supposed to be the best and while it held my attention I found it very shallow and repetitive, with a lot of ideas but not much meat to the bones. I don’t think that matters though as far as I understand there’s no one involved from the previous games in the new one and I imagine Microsoft are just going to use the name and the basic setting.
That has me pretty excited as it’s pretty much a blank slate and that’s what you want from a next gen game. I know Fable 4 hasn’t been announced yet but we all know it’s coming and I think it’s an exciting opportunity for Xbox.

Resource hog
Since I don’t think Nintendo games count for this I’m going to say XCOM 3. I have no idea if there’s going to be an XCOM 3 but I’m hoping that the reason one hasn’t been announced yet is that they know it wouldn’t run on the current consoles and so they’re waiting for the new ones to reveal it alongside the PC.
To be honest, I’m not quite sure why XCOM is such a resource hog, but I’m guessing it’s the artificial intelligence given the graphics aren’t really a draw and it’s turn-based. Maybe the destruction effects too, which is something I’d really like to see improve on the next gen. As a fan of the series I remember how ambitious XCOM: Apocalypse was with that and we haven’t got back to that yet.
In my mind a next gen XCOM would also be much more cinematic with the camera angles and everything, which is something the games attempt but don’t really push. Basically, I want it to look like a movie but play like good old XCOM.

A galaxy far, far away
I want to see what they’re going to do with Fallen Order 2. Say what you like about them the graphics in all the Star Wars games this gen have been fantastic, so I’d really like to see what EA’s teams can do with the next gen consoles. Fallen Order looked great in parts, that breakers yard at the beginning was excellent, but was very inconsistent later on, with the jungle world being easily the worst.
Games have never been very good at jungles and swamps, for obvious reasons because they’re the most messy and random environments on earth. I’d like to see how a setting like that is handled on the next gen machines, although I also don’t want them to go back to the same planets so maybe this is the wrong example.
Running around on an alien planet should be awe-inspiring and different and you don’t really get that in Fallen Order or most games. That dragon thing on the rock planet was probably the closest: a weird unexplained thing that you just stood and gawped at because it looked so realistic. I want more of that.

Defining Evil
At this point I assume Resident Evil 8 is going to be next gen. It’s not been announced yet so at the very most it’s going to be this Christmas, which should ensure it’s going to be cross-gen at least. And that I cannot wait to see.
For my money the two remasters have been the best graphics this generation (seriously, have you seen the Resident Evil 3 demo?), so I cannot wait to see what it looks like on the PlayStation 5 and in a brand new game that isn’t trying to recreate anything from the past.
I really do salute how Capcom has reinvented themselves in the last few years and brought Resident Evil and others back from the brink of irrelevance. Resident Evil 8 has the potential to be a defining release just like the original and I really hope it or something else next gen uses VR again as Resident Evil 7 was amazing. Here’s hoping for a reveal this year.

Parallel generation
I don’t think Nintendo games really count for this as they’re current gen, but I’m going to say Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 anyway. They’ll be coming out at the same time as the next gen console but I’m far more interested in them than Halo Infinite or whatever.
I just hope we get a Nintendo Direct sometime this century so we can get an idea of when they’ll be out.

Dinosaur world
I would love to see an open world Dino Crisis on the new consoles. Dinosaurs are sadly neglected in games, with only the mechanical variety in Horizon Zero Dawn and a few survival and sim games representing our Jurassic forebears.
With the Resident Evil remasters going down well, hopefully Capcom have plans to revive the series. It would be the perfect series to revive on the next gen platforms, with dense jungles and huge dinosaurs stomping around causing chaos and carnage. The extra power of the consoles would help add an extra destruction dimension and more dinos to create an action-packed game. The faster load times will also make a huge difference with open worlds able to load in faster, and games starting instantly.
I’m looking forward to what the next gen can bring, and hopefully it will see some new titles, as well as sequels to established franchises, as I’d much rather play some fresh games, than shinier versions of current gen titles.
