HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless review: 300 hours of battery and an awesome sound

HyperX have become behemoths in the online video game audio space in recent years.

Their headphones are generally excellent and offer both a comfort and killer audio sound.

These new cans follow on from their successful Cloud Alpha headset and the biggest draw this time is not only the wireless capability but the mega battery life.

The Cloud Alpha Wireless delivers around 300 gameplay hours of computer action without the need to keep re-charging the device.

It’s a huge step up from the 30-hour battery life in the Cloud II cans we reviewed a while back and gave top marks.

And it’s brilliant because it means you can get on with the gaming on your PC or PS5 from the get-go, plugging in a tiny USB to instantly trigger wireless connection across quite a distance.

You have freedom to roam, if that’s your thing while gaming, and no stress around awkward cables as you get into your chosen blockbuster.

And this thing just keeps on going, hour after hour, which is so refreshing in long gaming stints.

Cloud Alpha Wireless offers an immersive audio experience thanks to spatial audio via its dual-chamber drivers.

That effectively means the sound feels like its coming from different areas of the room.

So you can hear that rival running beside you on Call of Duty Vanguard, bullets whipping past your head, or get a real sense of another racer closing in behind in games like Gran Turismo 7.

The chambers themselves give a breathing room to the mids and highs pumped out by the 50mm drivers, allowing real definition between them.

So while you’ve got deep bass in the background, you’ll still have crisp high-end vocals and a separately rich all-encompassing mid-range audio effort to fill out the atmosphere.

It is simply excellent and really helps to deliver developer’s intentions around game sound immersion.

Comfort-wise, we’re big fans of the new, more rugged headband between the earphones themselves. Sometimes these can rub the top of your head during long gaming sessions but HyperX have done a good job at adding in just enough padding to not make that an issue.

Featuring onboard audio controls to adjust volume, mic mute and mic monitoring, the detachable Discord certified microphone has an LED indicator that turns red when muted.

And the noise-cancelling mic reduces background noise and offers clearer voice quality for improved team communication and in-game chat experiences.

Cloud Alpha Wireless broadcasts at 2.4GHz and up to 20 meters of wireless range.

The headset is compatible with NGENUITY software to check battery life, see and adjust equalizer settings and access more customisation options.

And it is built with quality aluminium frame construction paired with plush memory foam for long-lasting durability.

It’s pricey at £189, but quality comes at a cost.

And these long-running, clear and comfortable headphones will not disappoint.

VERDICT 5/5
