FCC sets 6GHz Wi-Fi vote for April 23, opening door to Wi-Fi 6E

As gigabit-class cellular networks continue to spread across the world, hardware makers have been itching to upgrade the speeds of home and office Wi-Fi networks — the technology was ready, just awaiting regulatory approval. The United States took a major step in that direction today, as FCC chairman Ajit Pai confirmed that the commission will vote on April 23 on opening 6GHz spectrum to next-generation Wi-Fi use.

Makers of Wi-Fi components have been pushing for this development since at least 2018, asking the FCC to free up a 1,200MHz-wide swath of 6GHz and adjacent frequencies to augment existing 5GHz Wi-Fi spectrum. As of January 2020, approval appeared imminent; the Wi-Fi Alliance preannounced “Wi-Fi 6E,” an enhanced version of Wi-Fi that supports 6GHz transmissions, enabling faster data rates and lower latency, but said the feature’s deployment was largely in the hands of regulators.

“[T]he FCC is aiming to increase the supply of Wi-Fi spectrum with our boldest initiative yet,” Pai said today, “making the entire 6GHz band available for unlicensed use. By doing this, we would effectively increase the amount of spectrum available for Wi-Fi almost by a factor of five.”

While a handful of routers and mobile devices have already launched with Wi-Fi 6 support, Wi-Fi 6E will add 14 new 80MHz channels and seven 160MHz channels that can be used as data pipes immediately adjacent to prior Wi-Fi spectrum. In an era where 5G smartphones (and home broadband modems) can achieve 1.5Gbps download speeds under optimal conditions, a single Wi-Fi 6E device should be capable of consuming most or all of that bandwidth, with headroom to spare as fiber and cellular speeds improve.

The FCC notes that Pai’s draft order initially contemplates two classes of wireless transmissions making use of the 6GHz band: indoor, low-power operations could use any frequency range within the 1,200MHz spectrum, while standard power transmissions will be able to access 850MHz of spectrum, while keeping away from previously permitted 6GHz users.

Collectively, the 6GHz channels add over two times more capacity to the FCC’s existing 480MHz allocation of 5GHz spectrum. They will also give routers the flexibility to choose between a greater range of additional frequencies. Apart from decongesting existing network environments, including dense housing where multiple users and devices are competing for limited 2.4GHz or 5GHz spectrum, the 6GHz frequencies might be used for high data rate applications, without the need to rely on shorter-distance millimeter wave spectrum. The FCC said today that it will seek public comments on allowing “very low-power devices” to access the full 1,200MHz of spectrum for “high-performance, wearable, augmented-reality and virtual-reality devices.”

FCC approval isn’t guaranteed as a result of the April vote, but it’s likely, as three of the five commissioners — including Pai — tend to vote in lock step. The Wi-Fi Alliance has signaled that 6GHz-compatible devices will be ready to go relatively quickly after approval is finalized.

Hello Neighbor Is A Hit For tinyBuild

Publisher tinyBuild is on-the-rise and absolutely crushing it regarding all things Hello Neighbor – their flagship title. The survival-horror game was created by Dynamic Pixels, released in 2017, and enjoys tens of millions of players worldwide.

The popularity of Hello Neighbor is so great that their supporting book series has already brought in $16 million in sales. The books tell the creepy adventures of Nicky Roth, who slowly discovers the truth behind his neighbors, the Petersons.

Hello Neighbor’s main audience is actually quite young, most players falling in the 8-16 age bracket. The CEO of tinyBuild, Alex Nichiporchik, believes that in order to succeed as a publisher in the modern age, knowing one’s audience is a must. Therefore, the partnership of children’s author Carly Anne West was a no-brainer for the team.

The game’s goal revolves around stealth and infiltration. Players undertake the role of a brave kid, Nicky Roth, who is trying to sneak into his neighbor’s house in order to uncover a mysterious secret in the basement.

I was able to visit tinyBuild’s booth at PAX South in San Antonio earlier this year, and I have to say I was impressed. Their entire section was carnival-themed, complete with crane games, gold tokens, and prizes. The booth mainly featured their follow-up title to the original hit game, entitled Secret Neighbor.

In Secret Neighbor, multiplayer is featured rather than a plot-driven solo experience. Players form a group of friends who are working together to get into the neighbor’s basement – except that one player is really the neighbor in disguise. The group of friends attempt to uncover the identity of the impostor as they gather basement keys, while the evil neighbor’s goal is to catch all of the kids.

Creepy neighbors aside, my personal favorite from their exhibition was called Black Skylands – a completely different type of game, admittedly. The top-down adventure features an open-world filled with airships and action. The detailed pixel art is particularly eye-catching and fighting in the game is a blast. It is set to release sometime during Q4 of this year.

Speaking of 2020, the publisher currently has over 25 projects in development, soon to join the ranks of tinyBuild’s 40 previous releases. They have grown quite a bit over the past few years, now operating out of Washington, Idaho, Netherlands, and Lativa. Keep an eye out for their next titles!

How to sign up for Valorant’s April 2020 closed beta

Riot Games announced details for Valorant’s closed beta starting April 7, 2020. The highly-anticipated 5v5 first-person shooter has attracted attention from the gaming community since its initial announcement. The goal of each round is for the attackers to detonate a spike on one of the three sites. Meanwhile, the counter-agents must prevent the attackers from destroying the site.

This weekend, Rod “Slasher” Breslau confirmed Riot was hosting an exclusive gameplay event. The secretive event was kept behind closed doors. Many popular streamers and professional players were quiet this weekend, presumably gearing up on the Valorant battlefield. Leaks of the game-capture event sparked massive interest in the possibility of closed beta popping up soon.

Valorant’s announcement says the first wave of players will step into the server in April 2020. Limited space is available for players in Europe, Canada, the United States, Turkey, Russia, and CIS. Additionally, Riot hopes to expand the closed beta to more regions, “pending the volatile logistics of launching a beta effectively during a global pandemic.” Daily Esports gathered all the need to know information about the closed beta and how to sign up.

Microsoft announces Teams for consumers, Skype daily active users up 70% to 40 million

As part of its Microsoft 365 for consumers news today, the company announced Microsoft Teams for consumers and new Skype metrics. Skype has passed 40 million daily active users, an increase of 70% month over month. Furthermore, Skype to Skype calling minutes are up 220% month over month. Less than two weeks ago, Microsoft shared that Teams usage exploded 110% in the past four months. Many of today’s new Office feature announcements have tie-ins with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and working from home trend. But Skype and Microsoft Teams are arguably the most relevant as people look to connect online.

Microsoft has shared very few usage numbers since acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion in October 2011. Skype’s monthly active users, for example, haven’t been updated since August 2015 — 300 million has been the number for years. With usage exploding due to COVID-19, however, the company was eager to talk up Skype, and then pivot to Microsoft Teams, its fastest-growing business app ever. Today’s news focused on consumer features, and indeed the company wants Microsoft Teams to expand beyond businesses.

Microsoft Teams for consumers

Microsoft Teams for consumers will offer features “for your personal life.” The company wants you to use Teams to plan trips, neighborhood gatherings, and book club meetings. You can share photos and videos in a group chat and make video calls, as you might expect. Additionally, you will soon be able to collaborate over shared to-do lists, assign tasks to specific people, and coordinate schedules.

And for your daily life, Microsoft is promising features to share grocery lists, organize across family calendars, and store important information like Wi-Fi passwords and account info. You’ll even be able to get location updates via the Microsoft Family Safety app announced today. Microsoft Teams for Android and iOS will get these new features in preview “in the coming months.”

Skype’s future in question

Microsoft wants you to use Skype for your personal life “in the meantime.” Until Microsoft Teams gets these features, consumers should continue to use Skype. This suggests that for consumers, Skype’s days are numbered, much as Skype for Business is being phased out in favor of Microsoft Teams.

When asked, Microsoft didn’t confirm or deny this. “For now, Skype will remain a great option for customers who love it and want to connect with basic chat and video calling capabilities,” a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat. “With the new features in the Microsoft Teams mobile app, we see Teams as an all in one hub for your work and life that integrates chat, video calling, [and the] ability to assign and share tasks, store and share important data with your group, [and] share your location with family and friends, whereas Skype is predominantly a chat and a video calling app platform. We have nothing more to share.”

Nevada to allow betting for CSGO through groundbreaking ruling

During the Covid-19 pandemic, traditional sports are on hiatus while esports are finding ways around the delays. Unfortunately, many people are missing the sports season they regularly bet on. Luckily, esports has taken one step towards a milestone: gaining the state of Nevada’s approval for people to place bets on them. On Wednesday, the Nevada Gaming Control Board “granted approval to offer wagers on Counter-Strike – ESL Pro League Season 11: North America”. This decision may encourage other states to legalize esports betting.

In previous years, regulators had allowed betting and gambling for a handful of esports events. The state allowing it for an entire league, however, is something new. This may also encourage a larger audience to watch CSGO during the suspension of other sporting events. Online betting and odds website William Hill was one of the first companies to partake in esports betting, with their current event being this week’s CSGO‘s Best of 3 Tournament matches.

In Nevada’s official approval, it clarifies the 3 kinds of wagering allowed.

  • Head to Head
  • Winner of Each Match
  • Overall Season Winner

Esports breaking through

Additionally, there are some conditions following this approval. If another wager deviates from the above listed, it’s not automatically counted out. It would, however, have to go through an application and gain the state’s approval in order to pass.

Although Europe and New Jersey accept wagering in esports, it has yet to be legalized. Last November, New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks began placing bets on competitive esports. The state is also trying to legalize esports betting with the bill A637, which has recently advanced out of an Assembly committee. The state’s Assembly Tourism, Gaming & the Arts Committee is currently waiting for Speaker approval.

During this time where the COVID-19 pandemic has left many sporting events postponed or canceled, esports finds a way to thrive. As new audiences move towards online gaming and tournaments, esports betting creates an impactful experience for those traditional sports lovers.

CoD Patch Notes For Warzone, Modern Warfare Reveal All The Big Changes

After a last-minute delay, the next big free update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Developer Infinity Ward announced on Twitter that the next update–which includes a new Operator and map for Modern Warfare and big changes for the Warzone battle royale mode–would arrive on Thursday, and it’s now available to download.

In terms of what’s new, the update adds a new Modern Warfare multiplayer Operator, Talon, who has a very good boy to accompany him. There is also a new map, Khandor Hideout, which will get its own 24/7 playlist at launch so people can play it endlessly.

Also new with the update is the NVG Infected mode, which is essentially Infected, but with the lights off. The “Survivors” team have thermal sights, but the Infected team can see in the dark. The Plunder mode for Warzone, meanwhile, adds a new variant in the form of “Blood Money.” This special game mode gives guaranteed cash drops for all kills, while completing bounty contracts and finishing moves pays out extra money as a bonus incentive.

The standard Warzone battle royale mode introduces four new weapons with the update: 725 Shotgun, MK2 Carbine, EBR-14, and the .50 GS. In terms of changes, Infinity Ward has nerfed shotgun damage from close range so a single shot will no longer down an enemy who has full armor. However, players who are using Stopping Power ammo can still down an enemy with a shotgun blast from close range with a single shot.

Warzone also now supports different controller button layouts, which is good news for one reason in particular. You can now choose to use the Bumper Ping and Bumper Ping Flipped layouts to use the “Ping” feature by pressing the controller’s bumper instead of the D-pad. This is wonderful news, as fans remarked that the D-pad configuration was awkward. This change brings Warzone more in line with Apex Legends, which also uses bumpers for pings.

Another notable change for Warzone is that the price of Loadout Drops from the Buy Station has been increased to $8,500, which is up from $6,000. The Loadout Drops have been one of Warzone’s most controversial new features because they allow you to spawn with any loadout you want from the main Modern Warfare mode, thus giving players the opportunity to wield high-power Legendary weapons early in matches.

At $6,000, the Loadout Drops were already the most expensive item you could purchase from the Buy Station. The new price increase should help level things out, though undoubtedly Loadout Drops will remain controversial.

BioWare Is Hiring For Next Entry In One Of Its ‘Prestigious Franchises’

According to a recent job listing, developer BioWare is currently working on the next game in one of its most popular series. So, if you’re a fan of Mass EffectDragon AgeStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or all three, you might have a pretty good reason to get excited.

Despite the underwhelming launch of 2019’s Anthem, BioWare is known for creating some classic titles. If the developer were to announce a new sequel for any of its fan-favorite games, the internet would likely erupt in anticipation. There may be no official word yet, but the company is currently searching for a senior engineering lead to work on one of its “prestigious franchises.”

This is most likely referring to Dragon Age 4, which, according to a recent earnings call, is currently in development with a 2022 release window. That being said, the fact that the game’s title isn’t listed in the job post could point to something else.

It could also be a hint at a Knights of the Old Republic remake, which is rumored to be in the works at EA. The publisher could very well be eyeing BioWare to helm the third installment, considering the company developed the first two. What would really surprise people though, is a new Mass Effect.

While we wait to find out, BioWare will also be reworking Anthem from the ground up, hoping that it will eventually find a solid player base. That being said, it’s clear the developer has learned to stick to what it knows, and we’re excited to learn what plans BioWare has for the future.

Nintendo Direct for March goes live, watch it here

Nintendo has a (surprise) new episode of its Nintendo Direct series, and you can watch it right now. The new episode of Nintendo Direct runs about 29 minutes and focuses on games coming to Nintendo Switch.

The new Nintendo Direct Mini episode touches on Xenoblade Chronicles, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Pokémon Sword and Shield.

The latest Nintendo Direct couldn’t come at a better time. Nintendo’s currently announced lineup consists of only a handful of games: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Square Enix’s Bravely Default 2, PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Only Xenoblade Chronicles and Bravely Default 2 have confirmed release windows in 2020.

Of course, Nintendo just recently released Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Switch, so many console owners are keeping busy. But with two next-gen console releases scheduled for later this year, Nintendo fans may want to know how to budget their 2020.

Nintendo recently streamed a new Indie World presentation, outlining some of the independently developed games coming to Switch this year.
