Castlevania, Cuphead, two Resident Evil shows, The Witcher (kinda sorta) — when it comes to adapting video games to TV, Netflix is the leading competitor. Now the company can add another notch to the belt.
On Tuesday, Netflix announced that it would team up with Ubisoft to “develop content” based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The first series is planned as an “epic, genre-bending” live-action adaptation from Ubisoft’s Film & Television team of Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik. The two companies are currently looking for a showrunner to oversee the project. This is the first stab at AC-related television for Ubisoft; in 2016, the game was turned into a mostly convoluted movie, produced and starring Michael Fassbender.
As for the when the series may takes place in the time-jumping saga, Netflix’s 10-second teaser suggests the live-action series could be inspired by the video game franchise’s seminal Ezio trilogy. That set of games kicked off in 2009 with Assassin’s Creed 2, which was followed by Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in 2010 and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations in 2011. The musical cue in the teaser comes directly from “Ezio’s Family,” the main theme from Jesper Kyd’s Assassin’s Creed 2 soundtrack.
“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” said Altman in a news release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, VP of original series at Netflix. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”
The Assassin’s Creed series isn’t the only Netflix-Ubisoft project in motion: In July, the two companies announced plans for a Beyond Good & Evil movie directed by Detective Pikachu’s Rob Letterman. There are also plans for a movie based on The Division, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain set to star.
Assassin’s Creed continues to be a major franchise for Ubisoft. The next game, the Viking adventure Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, debuts on Nov. 10.
