PS5 Preorder Availability: Console Currently Sold Out, Accessories Still Available

After months of fans waiting, Sony has finally revealed preorder information for the PlayStation 5, along with the price and release date for the next-generation console. Launching November 12 at $500 for the standard console and $400 for the digital edition, the PS5 went up for preorder early after yesterday’s PS5 event, and since then, stock has already sold out at most major retailers like Walmart and Best Buy. We’re tracking console availability below, and further down, you’ll find links for where to buy all the PS5 accessories, which are currently in stock.

Quick Look: Where to Preorder a PS5:

As of 3:38 PM ET on September 17, PS5 console preorders are currently sold out at all major retailers. This morning, the PS5 was in stock at Sam’s Club, but it’s now unavailable there. You can check the main listings below.

This new PS5 preorder date comes weeks after Sony opened preorder registration on its own website, saying it would be offering preorder reservations on a first-come, first-served basis from “existing customers.” According to the PS5 preorder FAQ page, the selection would be “based on previous interests and PlayStation activities,” and those who register would know if they’re selected if they are contacted by email.

According to reports, Sony has now dispatched multiple waves of email invitations to preorder the PS5 starting this Friday under this program. You can check your inbox for the subject line “Your exclusive invitation to pre-order.”

While Sony’s preorder sign-up page made it sound as though the first round of preorders would be exclusive to PlayStation Direct, that’s clearly not the case; instead, you’re simply putting your name on a list for the chance at a guarantee to preorder the PlayStation 5. The page is still taking sign-ups if you haven’t registered yet–you’ll simply need your PSN ID. It’s worth a shot.

GameStop is also offering a few different payment plans for the console, which include using a GameStop Credit Card or a “rent-to-own” payment plan. You can also trade in your old consoles for varying amounts of credit and apply that toward a new console. You can visit GameStop’s trade-in page to find out how much your console is worth in trade-in value.

You should know that retailers handle preorders differently when it comes to charging your credit card or PayPal. Amazon doesn’t charge your card until the product ships, while GameStop waits until five days before shipment. Target, Walmart, and Best Buy place authorization holds on your credit card. Though your card won’t actually be charged until the PS5 ships, it’s possible you’ll see a pending charge that will disappear and then come back until release. These authorization holds can affect your available credit.

The PS5 is just a few months away, and things look much clearer than they did a week ago. In addition to launch games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, the PS5 will be compatible with a large number of PS4 games through backward compatibility. It’s still not clear what the full compatibility list is, but thanks to the announcement of the Plus Collection, we know a bit more. An added benefit for PlayStation Plus, the Plus Collection gives all subscribers access to some of the PS4’s best games, including God of War, Bloodborne, and Monster Hunter: World. These games will be the PS4 versions and haven’t been confirmed to receive any kind of enhancements.

As far as a complete list goes, however, it’s still unclear. The reason for incompatibility was explained by system architect Mark Cerny, who said, “The boost is truly massive this time around and some game code just can’t handle it.” This means every PS4 game has to be tested to ensure its compatibility.

Other games the PlayStation 5 will see at launch include Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Destruction All Stars, and Astro’s Playroom. PS5 owners will also be able to expect a number of other games in the coming months and years, including Horizon Forbidden West, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as well as third-party titles like Resident Evil 8: Village and Hitman III. During the recent PS5 showcase event, Sony also revealed a new God of War and Final Fantasy XVI, both of which will arrive on PS5 next year.

The PS5’s specs are old news at this point, but it’s safe to say we saw some exciting uses of the custom 825GB SSD during the PS5 event. Fast load times in Demon’s Souls were the big highlight, though the custom SSD will also ensure fast open-world streaming and faster install times.

Additionally, the console supports ray tracing, 3D audio, and PlayStation VR as well as 4K UHD Blu-ray discs thanks to its compatible disc drive–of course, the PS5’s Digital edition won’t support physical discs. Sony has stated the PS5 is powerful enough to support 4K resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate and 8K resolution content, the latter of which likely won’t be used widely in games for a while. This is all powered by HDMI 2.1 technology, which not all games support. However, any HD or 4K TV you have at home will still be able to display and run your PS5 and its games.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the PS5 is its DualSense controller, which promises to deliver a more immersive gaming experience than the DualShock 4. The DualSense intends to do that with new haptic feedback technology as well as adaptive triggers that developers can program to function in different ways. Some developers have explained how they’re using the DualSense’s unique features–Deathloop director Dinga Bakaba said they block the triggers if your gun jams.

As for last-gen and third-party accessories, not everything will work with the PS5. The DualShock 4 will work with PS4 games, but you’ll need a DualSense if you want to play anything specific to the PS5.
