After months of speculation, it seems that 100 Thieves may be returning to competitive Call of Duty after all.
When we first heard the news of OpTic gaming being reacquired by its founder Hector “Hecz” Rodriguez, many fans speculated on possible new entries to the Call of Duty League. With Hecz required to sell the Los Angeles CDL spot which came with the purchase of OpTic, 100 Thieves were the obvious choice. It is rumored that they initially turned down the offer. But they have reportedly had a rethink and will in fact be returning to Call of Duty esports.
100 Thieves’ legacy
100 Thieves are a Los Angeles-based esports, entertainment and apparel company. Owned by former professional Call of Duty player Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag, 100 Thieves have a big connection to Call of Duty. In fact, this is where a large part of their following comes from. They initially joined competitive Call of Duty back in the Black Ops 3 season. However, with only three events played, their real entry came in the 2019 Black Ops 4 season.
Here, their team of Sam “Octane” Larew, Kenny “Kuavo” Williams, Austin “Slasher” Liddicoat, Ian “Enable” Wyatt, Preston “Priestahh” Greiner and substitute Maurice “Fero” Henrequez won back to back CWL events in London and Anaheim, while also placing second at the World Championships. 100 Thieves brings a major audience to competitive Call of Duty. They’re also one of the biggest esports organizations in the world. With strong connections between Nadeshot and Hecz, it definitely wouldn’t be surprising if this was true, and the LA Thieves would be a name within the CDL next season.
The Deal
At this point, we know that Hecz has rebought the OpTic Gaming IP from Immortals Gaming Club. However, this purchase comes with their current Los Angeles Call of Duty League spot. This means that Hecz has a difficult choice. To remove himself from ownership of either his current Chicago spot, or the newly acquired Los Angeles spot.
With the rumors suggesting the arrival of the LA Thieves, we’re left with the question of, what happens to OpTic? Well, it is unclear whether the League will allow Hecz to rebrand the Chicago Huntsmen. If this is possible, we expect to see the Huntsmen rebrand into OpTic Gaming for the 2021 season and beyond.
