The BBC has announced that it will be broadcasting the tenth season of the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS X) on January 9th.

Following on from its showcase of the European Spring Series in 2020, Rocket League will return to BBC Sport’s online and app platforms, as well as the BBC iPlayer, for the broadcaster’s first esports tournament of 2021.

The BBC will be broadcasting the RLCS X Winter Split, in particular Europe Regional #3, with organisations having already completed the ‘Fall’ section of the competition last year. The broadcasts are set to commence at 3:30 pm on January 9th and 10th.

Moreover, the London-based media company has revealed that further broadcasts of the competition are planned for January 16th and 17th.

Some of the participants competing in Europe Regional #3 include David Beckham’s Guild Esports, Wolves eSports, the professional gaming arm of Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as football giant FC Barcelona.

Potentially facing Guild Esports will be former player and new star signing for Team Singularity, Kyle ‘Scrub Killa’ Robertson, a Scottish 17-year-old who is widely regarded as one of the best Rocket League talents in the world.

As noted prior, this isn’t the first time that the BBC has aired Rocket League to showcase esports in the mainstream media as it broadcasted the European Spring Series in May last year.

Additionally, the media company’s esports content in 2021 is not solely including Rocket League, as the BBC has already announced that it will be broadcasting the CS:GO BLAST Premier Global Final on its BBC iPlayer later this month. Moreover, BBC Three is also set to air a five-part tv-series following UK-based esports organisation EXCEL Esports.

Esports Insider Says: The demand for esports in the mainstream media continues to develop as the BBC taps into the wealth of esports with Rocket League – something they have already tested the waters of before and found success in. With Rocket League being a relatively simple esport to understand, this is no doubt going to be a successful coverage choice for the BBC.
