The Boston Uprising have signed Korean main support Hong-gyu “Faith” Kim and flex DPS Byeong-ju “Valentine” Kim. The duo, who are joining the Uprising from Korean Contenders team World Game Star Phoenix, seem to complete the Uprising’s roster for 2021.
Faith and Valentine’s paths to Boston
Both players began their careers playing in the Open Division. Known now for his Lucio and Mercy play, Faith started for Korean team Maxtill Soar before moving to the Pacific region and joining Global Esports.
After finishing second to Talon Esports at the end of 2019, Faith decided to move to the Chinese region. He primarily played for Phantom Wizard, a good trials team who never placed well in contenders. But after joining one of World Game Star Phoenix’s other teams, he worked his way up to the main roster. During his first season with the team, they beat RunAway to win the Korean contenders title.
Valentine started in the Pacific Open Division, playing for Gamecoach Academy. After moving to New Paradigm, he returned to the Korean region and bounced around between teams. He joined Team MVP and Gen.B before finally sticking with World Game Star Phoenix.
As the team’s flex DPS, his need to learn Echo quickly and play at a high level helped him surge to success alongside his team. After beating RunAway in week four, he helped beat them again in the season finals. Alongside Faith, he was a hot commodity as a flexible player for the 2021 season.
Boston finalizing their roster
With this duo signing, it’s hard to see Boston picking up anyone else. If they’re confident with the roster they have here, their only lingering need is a backup is the off-tank role. Even then, their recent signing of Young-sun “GaeBullSsi” Yun might help.
However, as other teams and players have demonstrated throughout last year, the Uprising could struggle fit the duo into a mixed roster. But with Terrence “SoOn” Tarlier also joining the team , it’s clear Boston wants the best players available.
