Fortnite: What’s New in Patch v12.20?

Get caught up with the changes implemented in Fortnite’s newest patch.

We are now a little under one month into Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2. The latest update to the Fortnite’s patch cycle saw the release of Proximity Mines and the return of Loot Llamas. It was somewhat of an underwhelming patch, and the game’s overall performance continues to suffer, especially for competitive players. Small adjustments have affected the new Ghost and Shadow points of interest where players can earn insane loot like mythic weapons and heavy snipers. As we continue into Chapter 2 Season 2, let’s see what all is new with Fortnite Patch v12.20.

Crowd-Sourced Patch Notes

Since Epic Games no longer provides any semblance of patch notes, Reddit user u/FortniteMods did us the liberty of starting the discussion.

Helicopters are Finally Here

  • Not in competitive modes
  • Can fit five people: one driver and four passengers
  • Helicopter rotors do 50 damage
  • No redeploy
  • 1500 HP
  • Able to boost
  • Able to hover in place
  • Takes damage when colliding with builds

After numerous rumors and leaks, helicopters have made their way into Fortnite. Competitive players will be glad to see that they are not present in Arena modes. These new vehicles should be fun to use in casual game types, considering how much chaos they’ll add to the map.

Grappler Fire Rate Nerfed

The Mythic Grappler, which players can find at The Shark, received a minor adjustment with the latest patch. It now fires slower than it did previously, which will make it a bit more difficult for players rotating. Regardless, it’s still a useful tool for getting across the map in a short amount of time.

Harpoon Gun Nerfed

On top of the Grappler adjustment, the Harpoon Gun can no longer grab items, materials or ammo. This change is significant for the competitive community because it renders the Harpoon Gun useless in late-game situations. Previously, players would often carry a Harpoon to retrieve the loot from an eliminated player. The weapon can now only fish and also presumably deal damage. There is, however, a Trello card titled “Harpoon Gun not catching loot.” Harpooning loot may not be functioning as it should. We will have to check the next patch to see if the developers fix and add it back into Fortnite.

Map Changes

  • Oil Rig exploded and caused an oil spill
  • Pleasant Park has a hole in the middle

TNTina is still the proverbial boss at the Oil Rig despite aesthetic changes to the POI. It’s also worth noting that Pleasant Park now has a helipad in the middle of the soccer field, which now has a gaping hole. Other than that, we can expect a decent amount of helicopters around the map.

General Bug Fixes

  • Unable to place trap if trap icon hasn’t finished loading.
  • Unable to resume Auto-Sprint on PlayStation 4.
  • Buildings and structures may appear low detail.
  • Stuck inside Porta Potty.
  • Player markers placed too far away.
  • End of match: unable to return to Lobby, go to Item Shop, or report player.

Overall it’s quite a unique patch considering how long we’ve seen rumors of the helicopter. Similar to last season, Epic Games is holding off on significant in-game changes from one patch to the next. We are seeing minor adjustments, which in general is fine as long as the game stays fresh. So drop into Fortnite Battle Royale and play around with the game’s newest vehicle.
