Earlier this week, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered released on PlayStation 4 to near-universal praise. Besides the exclusivity and fan disappointment about Campaign-only, it was a huge success. Players marveled at the revamped missions and graphics that hadn’t been played in over ten years.
However, in the back of many player’s minds was the distant memory of Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer. Activision chose not to release the multiplayer mode due to fears of splitting up the player base. The thing is, this may have not been entirely true, according to a recent leak from TheGamingRevolution.
Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer coming after all?
Prior to the Campaign’s release, the rumor was that Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer remastered was in the works. Leaks from multiple sources stated that the title would launch sometime in 2020, but they didn’t provide a date at the time.
Of course, this looked to be false when Activision only made the Campaign available. The publisher’s explanation also made sense, as the player base is united on Modern Warfare with cross-play enabled. Releasing the remastered multiplayer would split this base quite significantly.
This may not matter in the future, however, as a leaker has stated that the company is actively testing the multiplayer mode. TheGamingRevolution, a well-know leaker, recently published a video going over the subject.
According to TGR, his source within Activision says the company is currently trying to balance the mode. Apparently, they’re testing multiplayer, which only happens when a release is planned for the future. This does line up with leaks we’ve heard in the past. Also, it seems unlikely that Activision wouldn’t take the massive amount of revenue that Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer remastered would bring in.
At this time, we can’t be sure of anything. Activision has said that multiplayer isn’t happening, but they also said that about Modern Warfare battle royale. And just look at how that turned out.
