Indian telecommunications and technology company Reliance Jio announced a partnership with Taiwanese electronics components manufacturer, MediaTek to host a Free Fire tournament in India with a prize pool of INR 1.25M ($17K). The 70-day tournament will be broadcast on the Jio TV app as well as YouTube and is hosted via the Jio Games platform.
This is not Reliance Jio’s first foray into the world of esports as the brand has organized smaller tournaments on their platform in the past. However, this is a more direct involvement as a tournament organizer and a much more substantial offering in terms of a prize pool. However, there is little clarity in terms of what Reliance Jio wants to do in esports, when it plans to do it, and how it plans to scale.
