Pokemon Go Fest 2020 is less than two weeks away, but that’s not the only Pokemon Go event on the horizon. Ahead of the big two-day celebration, Niantic is hosting a new Community Day this weekend, giving players everywhere a chance to catch another Shiny Pokemon, learn an event-exclusive move, and more.
July’s Community Day takes place this Sunday, July 19, and once again, Niantic is tweaking some aspects of the event to make it easier participate in from home amid the coronavirus pandemic. To help you prepare, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about July’s Community Day below.
July’s Featured Pokemon: Gastly
This month’s featured Pokemon is the Ghost type Gastly. Throughout the Community Day, Gastly will spawn in the wild more frequently than normal, making it much easier to find. Additionally, you’ll have a chance to encounter a Shiny Gastly during the event.
Since Shiny Pokemon are typically rare in Pokemon Go, there’s no guaranteed way to find a Shiny Gastly. That said, you should be able to stumble upon a few of them with enough persistence thanks to the increased spawn rate, so just keep at it and you’ll eventually find a Shiny Gastly.
July’s Community Day Move: Shadow Punch
In addition to having an increased spawn rate, each Community Day’s featured Pokemon is able to get a special event-exclusive move that it can’t otherwise learn in Pokemon Go. This month, that move is Shadow Punch, a Ghost-type Charge attack.
If you can evolve Haunter–Gastly’s evolved form–into Gengar up to two hours after the Community Day officially ends, it’ll automatically learn Shadow Punch. This applies to any Haunter that evolves during the designated time frame, even if you obtained it prior to the event.
How To Evolve Haunter Into Gengar
You can evolve Gastly the standard way by feeding it enough Gastly Candy, but you’ll need to have a lot of Candy stocked up to do that. Fortunately, there’s a second–and potentially more expedient–way you can obtain a Gengar in Pokemon Go: the recently introduced trade evolution method.
Just as in the mainline Pokemon games, certain Pokemon can now essentially evolve via trading. If you receive an eligible Pokemon in a trade, its Candy requirement will be completely removed, letting you effectively evolve it for free. Haunter is one of the Pokemon that can evolve this way, so if you receive one in a trade from a friend, you’ll no longer need to feed it any Candy to evolve it into Gengar.
July Community Day Hours
Like the past few Community Days, this month’s event will run for six hours instead of the traditional three, from 11 AM to 5 PM local time. This means you’ll have until 7 PM local time to evolve Haunter and obtain a Gengar that knows Shadow Punch.
Other Bonuses
On top of increased Gastly spawns, Niantic is offering a few other in-game bonuses during July’s Community Day. First, Pokemon eggs will hatch at a quarter of the distance they normally require. Additionally, any Incense that you use during the event will remain active for three hours rather than the standard 30 minutes.
Beyond that, Niantic will hold a special Community Day-exclusive Special Research questline called The Great Gastly. To access that, however, you’ll need to purchase a virtual ticket for $1 USD. Pokemon Go’s in-game shop will also be selling a special Community Day bundle that includes the following items:
- 1 Elite Fast TM
- 30 Ultra Balls
- 2 Incense
- 2 Super Incubators
