After what felt like years of delays, WB Montreal's Gotham Knights finally had its release. This open-world action game puts you in the shoes of the Bat Family, watching over Gotham after the death of Bruce Wayne. You can tackle missions, solve crimes, and explore the city as Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, or Batgirl.
Taking cues from many games that came before, Gotham Knights is similar to many other titles. If you've rolled the credits on this cooperative adventure, then there are plenty of others to try that will keep you encountering foes or delving into the world of Gotham.
10/10 Batman: Arkham Knight
The clearest inspiration Gotham Knights takes is from Rocksteady's Arkham series. The final game in their trilogy, Batman: Arkham Knight, still holds up surprisingly well, despite being an early title on PS4 and Xbox One. Rocksteady refined their freeflowing combat to a brilliant shine and gives you more tools than you've ever had before as the Dark Knight.
Gotham City is also designed for you to drive the Batmobile, which is a transcendent experience. To top things off, it still looks visually incredible, and in many ways, is more impressive than Gotham Knights. If you want an experience that makes you "feel like Batman," then this is it.
9/10 Marvel's Spider-Man
You've been living under a rock if you haven't heard the praise of Marvel's Spider-Man from Insomniac. This once PlayStation exclusive puts you in Peter Parker's shoes as he zips through Manhattan, stops crimes daily, and tackles a host of superpowered bad guys.
The level of refinement and craft in this game is downright impressive. Couple that with a swinging system that feels crisp and is easy to get into, there's a lot to love. If you're a sucker for a good story, then don't worry. This game has you covered there as well. Be sure to play the remastered version to take advantage of ray-tracing and uncapped frame rates.
8/10 Marvel's Avengers
While Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix's Avengers game wasn't the stuff of legend, there are still plenty of players who enjoy it for what it is. Just like Gotham Knights, you have multiple characters to control and upgrade independently, with separate items and equipment you can craft for them.
Marvel's Avengers is focused on more linear missions, so the focus is almost always on the combat. Furthermore, if you get sucked into Marvel's Avengers, there's plenty of content to keep you busy, with the additions of Hawkeye, Black Panther, Jane Foster, and more to bolster your playtime.
7/10 Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War got a lot of deservedly bad press when it came out. The game was balanced around microtransactions, directly contrasting its gameplay and world. However, Monolith and Warner Bros ironed those kinks out and reworked the game to make for a surprisingly competent power fantasy set in Tolkien's Middle-Earth.
If you're a diehard The Lord of the Rings fan, you may not like the creative liberties taken with the lore, but if you're just looking for a fun time with razor-sharp combat, then look no further.
6/10 Assassin's Creed Origins
If crafting new equipment, taking on bad guys who get stronger as the game goes on, and slowly exploring a large world are what hooked you in Gotham Knights, then Assassin's Creed Origins may be your next game. While there have been complaints about the modern games in the series with Odyssey and Valhalla, Origins remains a diamond in the rough.
The game wastes no time putting you in Bayek's shoes and letting you play. Ancient Egypt is a well-realized open world packed with characters to meet and people to take down. On top of that, it's a great starting point for newcomers, as it goes through how the Assassins came to be.
5/10 Watch Dogs 2
The appeal of Gotham Knights lies in controlling powerful vigilantes to enact justice on criminals rampaging the city. In Watch Dogs 2, you'll be doing that as well, but with a twist: hacking will be your primary mode of attack.
Watch Dogs 2 is a rebellious game by nature, allowing you to wreak havoc as you see fit. The amount of options is impressive, with you able to hack vehicles, computers, weapons, and more. The first game was considered a disappointment by many, but Ubisoft refined many of those issues for the sequel.
4/10 Cyberpunk 2077
Gotham City has been adapted in a few different ways, but some elements remain the same: it's riddled with crime, it has a dystopian feel, and there are people with crazy powers who roam its streets. For these reasons, you may also be interested in Cyberpunk 2077.
While its launch was riddled with bugs, issues, and unmet promises, CD Projekt Red has turned it into a functional game where many would praise it as one of the most immersive RPGs of its time. While it is a much more in-depth game than Gotham Knights, it's clear that there's something enticing about it that has appealed to so many players.
3/10 Injustice 2
Injustice 2 is a fighting game, so you won't be chasing bad guys or roaming the streets of Gotham. However, it is baked entirely in the world of DC Comics, so you'll encounter many familiar faces. Red Hood, Robin, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and more are all represented in this roster.
The game's content has been finished for years now, including the likes of Sub-Zero, Hellboy, and the Ninja Turtles. This means that it's inexpensive and easy to dive in. Even if you have no interest in battling other players, the campaign is meaty enough that it's worth the low price of admission.
2/10 LEGO Batman
There have been a total of three LEGO Batman games and a LEGO DC Super-Villains game. However, for Gotham Knights fans, we'd have to recommend the first game. LEGO Batman retains the focus on the Caped Crusader, his allies, and his adversaries without introducing other members of DC Comics.
It's an homage to everything people loved about the character up to that point. Once again, you'll also get to play as Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl in the streets of Gotham. There's also a villain story where you get to play as some of the greatest antagonists in comic books.
1/10 The Division 2
There are several games that allow players to team up and tackle missions together like in Gotham Knights. For your money, though, The Division 2 might be the next title you want to look into. This game takes place in Washington D.C. after a deadly virus was released. D.C. is an open world you and your friends can explore and find missions to tackle. Sound familiar?
However, instead of beating up bad guys with your fists, you'll make use of rifles, shotguns, and more. Despite this gameplay style being oversaturated, The Division 2 reviewed extremely well and has numerous content to keep you and your friends busy for months.
