From the makers of XCOM comes Marvel's Midnight Suns, a tactical RPG with a card-based combat system and a dream team of superheroes, antiheroes, and villains to play with. Surprisingly, even though the quality is evident from the same development team, Midnight Suns share little in common with the XCOM Series.
Firaxis Games should be commended for trying and successfully making something different with Marvel Midnight Suns. Marvel fans even get to create a custom superhero to take into battle called The Hunter. There are side quests and relationship bonds to build that see heroes like Captain America and Blade coming together in fun ways. This list has been put together for fans looking for something similar based on the best parts of Marvel's Midnight Suns.
7/7 Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Outside of the turn-based combat, Marvel's Midnight Suns has a social aspect that allows the heroes to build and develop relationships at the home base known as The Abbey. Mechanically, this is similar to the relationship-building system in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
The better the connection between the heroes in their downtime, the better they work together on the battlefield. This is a mechanic that both games share, making Fire Emblem: Three Houses a good fit for fans of Marvel's Midnight Suns.
6/7 Marvel's Ultimate Alliance Series
The gameplay in Marvel Ultimate Alliance is worlds apart from the Midnight Suns, but if putting together a dream team of superheroes to fight bad guys is the main draw for you, then this action RPG series is worth your time.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance's gameplay has more in common with the Diablo series, but creating teams that have an affinity with each other to pull off super combos is similar to Midnight Suns. Moreover, the characters get to interact with each other back at the base for some character development.
5/7 Divinity Original Sin 2
In addition to the turn-based battles, Marvel's Midnight Suns have solid RPG mechanics, character creation, and character development. Despite the different settings, Divinity: Original Sin 2 has everything a fan of the RPG genre could ask for.
Original Sin 2 is one of the best RPGs playable on current systems. It's a deeper RPG than Midnight Suns and has a world that develops around your character's decisions in both side and main quests. Fans of the Suns' tactical combat will also enjoy Original Sin 2's turn-based combat, which manages to have depth and accessible mechanics.
4/7 Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy surprised everyone when it launched as one of the best games of 2021. Again the action is completely different from the turn-based system in Midnight Suns, but the top-notch story and the chemistry between the Guardians are on par with Suns.
Similarly to Midnight Suns, Guardians of the Galaxy has special attacks that combine the powers and abilities of all the characters in unique ways. Guardians is also one of the best superhero games ever made, and Marvel fans will be overjoyed to play it.
3/7 Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
Fans of Midnight Sun's dialogue trees and character development will enjoy all of The Witcher series. However, the spin-off title Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is smaller scale but has a plot as grand as the AAA mainline titles.
The Midnight Sun's innovative card-based combat is different from the strategic elements in Thronebreaker's Gwent card game. Gwent began as a popular side game in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Like Midnight Suns, the Gwent-based combat is thrilling, strategic, and far more exciting than one would expect. Instead of Geralt, players take on the role of Queen Meve as she has to make gut-wrenching decisions that change the political alliances and impact friendships.
2/7 Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition combines three of the greatest RPGs of all time in a space opera epic. The games are a clear inspiration for Marvel's Midnight Son's interactions and conversation choices. There's an element of strategy to the combat and more exploration to offer.
Even now, the first game still holds up as one of the best sci-fi RPGs. It brings elements of the best sci-fi like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Battlestar Galactica into one lore-filled universe that fans of the genre will love.
1/7 Slay The Spire
Slay the Spire is a card-based rogue-like from the indie developer Megacrit. Despite the simplistic visuals, Slay the Spire has a deep system with great characters and a gameplay loop that begs to be played repeatedly.
The battle gameplay is similar to Midnight Suns in that the hero's abilities depend on the cards randomly dealt to the team. Like Suns, players get to choose their best cards, but the game will randomly select the set that gets added to the deck.
