Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has drug trips and at least one brothel

The age rating for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla confirms heavy violence, magic mushrooms, and one mission set in a brothel.

With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla ready to launch this November, for both current and next-gen systems, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has officially rated it as ‘M for Mature’ in the US.

It has already received an 18 rating here in the UK, but that’s hardly surprising as previous entries have been given the same rating.

However, the ESRB’s listing explains why the game has been given a mature rating, which in turn has revealed a few interesting titbits of content.

For starters, it mentions that there are several sequences that involve player character Eivor inhaling mushroom-based fumes that basically cause a drug trip, affecting the character’s movement and causing screen distortion and discolouration. A line of dialogue even reads ‘I may still be buzzing from these mushrooms.’

Whether this is something that only occurs in certain missions or is something the player can take part in at any time isn’t clear.

The series is no stranger to having hallucination sequences. In Assassin’s Creed Origins, you could be subjected to them whilst in the desert, though this is the first time they’re brought about through drug use.

The listing also talks about examples of sexual material. We already know that Valhalla will feature romance options, like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but the ESRB writes that one mission involves a brothel and features topless women straddling men.

While discussing the game’s level of violence, the ESRB notes that, during combat, the game will sometimes zoom in on attacks to highlight the enemy’s bones, organs, and muscles being damaged.

This was something which was shown during a trailer from the Ubisoft Forward event in July and certainly seems to make Valhalla the most violent entry in the series so far.

It’s possible we’ll see more of Valhalla at the next Ubisoft Forward, which will be taking place this Thursday, 10 September.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release on 17 November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. It will be a launch title for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
