Battle Royale Population: One Lands 22nd October

BigBoxVR’s Population: One came out of hiding a few weeks ago during Facebook Connect, confirming that the battle royale would launch this year. Today, that release date has now been confirmed as 22nd October 2020, just over two weeks away.

A multiplatform launch for Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows MR, and Valve Index, Population: One is set to bring the freedom of the battle royale genre to virtual reality (VR), whilst offering the sort of immersive gameplay mechanics only VR can.

“We’ve worked hard to bring Population: One to as many platforms as possible by pushing the absolute limits of modern mobile VR chipsets,” said Gabe Brown, BigBox VR’s CTO and co-founder in a statement. “We’re excited to see how players use the Vertical Combat System to compete and win starting on October 22nd!”

That Vertical Combat System (VCS) is one of the key components of Population: One. This provides players with the ability to explore and scale the entire environment, no part of the map is off limits. Physically climb buildings with your hands or collect resources to build your own walls and platforms to fight from. Once up high you can then leap off, spread your arms and glide to a new location or engage in some aerial combat.

Each Population: One match supports 18 players, six squads with three players each. Drop pods launch them into the sky from where they can glide down to the map with teammates. Weapons, health and other perks are then littered around the map to pick up, from shotguns and sniper rifles to bananas and cans of pop. These all have VR mechanics so that guns have to be manually reloaded and those bananas need to be peeled.

“Our vision for Population: One is to create the future of VR online multiplayer with next-gen gameplay and social connection, only possible in VR,” adds Chia Chin Lee, BigBox VR’s CEO and co-founder.

Population: One will retail for all aforementioned headsets for $29.99 USD. After launch BigboxVR will be releasing regular content drops, features, and cosmetic items for players to unlock. As that launch approaches, keep reading VRFocus.
