BioShock Infinite Gets A Launcher On PC In "Quality Of Life Update"

Fancy another launcher on your PC? 2K Games has you covered. A long-awaited "quality of life" update to BioShock Infinite on Steam is finally with us, and after endless speculation about a possible remaster, it turns out we're just getting another launcher, and the ability to "purchase new content" while playing a game that is nine years old.

As you can expect, the announcement hasn't gone down amazingly with fans. Already, many are reporting that the update is harming the performance of the game, and some even worry that the update makes it incompatible with Steam Deck.

"This week's update features various quality-of-life improvements, including: Account linking option added in-game [and] the addition of a new Launcher which includes a Store to purchase new content", reads the short description for the latest update.

Unsurprisingly, the comment section is overwhelmingly negative. "Ballsy of you to put 'Quality of Life' and 'Launcher' in one single post", says Steam user TG_Judgement. "Game now deleted and never playing it ever again", agrees jjgladiator.

According to other users, the update isn't even working as intended. "I can't even launch the game due to Steam claiming that the launcher is not in the game files", says Major Arlene, who has tried to download the launcher. "Crashes my game constantly and makes [the] game unplayable. Thanks 2K", replies jtredenick.

It's not particularly clear why 2K has decided to make a launcher necessary after so long. ReserEra users have highlighted that the launcher likely makes Infinite unplayable on Steam Deck, making the move even more confusing.

Requiring a launcher to play a game has long been an unpopular move in the gaming community. Not only does it add another step before you can start playing, but it also gives publishers a method to add DRM, which has been known to harm the performance of games. Not only that, many will also require you to set up an account with the publisher, which will involve handing over personal info such as email addresses so more products can be advertised to you.

2K is yet to respond to the overwhelmingly negative reception of its latest update.
