Supermassive Games has started work on its next standalone horror game and is expecting it to release by 2026.
Just a few months ago, Supermassive Games released its first standalone horror game in seven years, The Quarry, something that it'll then follow up with the next game in the Dark Pictures Anthology, The Devil In Me, later in the year. If that sounds like a lot then you might be surprised to learn that it's already working on the next big thing.
During an interview with VGC, Supermassive Games' studio director Will Byles confirmed that the team has started work on its next standalone horror game and gave some brief details about it, including that it's expected to release in 2025 or 2026, and that it might not focus on teen horror like The Quarry and Until Dawn.
Byles said, "We’ve started working on [the next game]. “I can’t really tell you very much at all about it, but we have started. Again, it’s the same sort of horror genre, we’re sticking to that. It’s equivalent in size to The Quarry… and that’s about as much as I can say without giving too much away."
Although he didn't give any details on what to expect from the next game, Byles did imply that it's going to be different to both The Dark Pictures Anthology games and The Quarry. He said, "The Dark Pictures explores hundreds of variants of the horror genre. What we’re looking at now, and I can’t tell you exactly what it is, is a bit of a diversion away from that sort of standard, but it’s still very much classic horror… I don’t know how far we can stretch the teen horror thing out further, because especially when we try to stir it up, the number of surprises you can add to that becomes limited."
When asked if there's going to be as big of a gap between the next game and The Quarry, which was seven years, Byles said that it's looking closer to four years, giving a release window of "2025, or maybe 2026".
