If you didn’t manage to pre-order one of those PS2 style custom PS5 console don’t worry, because they all ended up getting cancelled anyway.
Death threats against people in the games industry are a sadly commonplace part of modern fandom, but things may have sunk to a new low when it comes to the fate of the SUP3R5 custom PlayStation 5 consoles.
As announced last week, the consoles feature special side panels and a logo insert to make them look like a PlayStation 2, including a special black DualSense controller.
It was weird to see precious PlayStation 5 stock wasted on a design like that but as expected pre-orders all sold out quickly anyway… and that was the start of the problems.
SUP3R5 has announced that the release of the controllers and consoles has been ‘postponed’ and that they’ve started the process of refunding all orders.
The reason for that though is that staff have been receiving ‘credible threats to their safety’ and now not only have the sales been cancelled but SUP3R5’s Twitter account has been deleted.
The threats were as a result of orders not going through and problems with the website, with the company seemingly being unable to cope with demand (although what exactly they thought was going to happen, given how scarce PlayStation 5 consoles are right now, is a mystery).
SUP3R5 had implied that they would attempt to put the consoles up for sale again soon, especially as they never even started processing international orders, but now that the Twitter account has gone down it’s not clear what’s going to happen.
‘We intended this to be a fun way to celebrate a shared nostalgia. As it turns out, there are people out there who are willing to interfere with that. If we determine that it’s safe to try again, we will. For now, please stay safe,’ said a statement given to website Tom’s Guide.
To add to the controversy, it’s been discovered that the images of the console SUP3R5 have been using on their website were originally posted on Reddit, although that too has now been deleted.
What the implies is unclear, but at the very least it means the final consoles probably won’t look exactly like the images shown.
It’s all a bit of a disaster, which pretty much describes the whole PlayStation 5 stock situation, since there’s been no new update on when to expect normal versions of the consoles to be available in UK shops – despite rumours that retailers would begin to receive more ‘early’ in the new year.
