A common feature of classic RPGs that is greatly missed in many more modern games is the ability to customize your UI. This often took the form of color changes or font options, but Chrono Cross took it a step further and added multiple message window frame designs to choose from.
While you start with a few options to choose from, most of the frame designs in the game must be acquired. Some are ostentatious, some are bizarre, and some are easy on the eyes, so it's worth getting as many as you can to see which you like the most.
All Frame Locations
There are 15 frame options available in Chrono Cross, three of which you start the game with. To change frames, head to the Customize menu, and for the Window Frame option, select Custom. Press the confirm button and you'll open a selection menu with every frame you've acquired so far.
Here's how to get them all.
It is not possible to get every frame in one playthrough as two frames are mutually exclusive. You'll be able to get Guldovian Stitch if you choose to save Kid, and Tropical Paradise if you don't.
Images of each frame coming soon.
Window Frame | Acquisition Method |
---|---|
Arnian Wood | You start with this frame. It is the default setting. |
Iron Plate | You start with this frame. |
Simple Line | You start with this frame. |
Shellfish | Home World: Examine the shopkeeper's cart in Arni Village. |
Tea for Three | Another World: Talk to an invisible man to the left of the statue of Viper in Termina. Respond "Understood" when prompted. |
Skullduggery | Another World: In the Shadow Forest, feed the Quaffid on the third screen from the entrance a red blob using the Aroma Pouch to lure it. |
Porre's Furnace | Another World: Return to Viper Manor after leaving Guldove for the first time and find a secret door behind the desk in the library tower. Talk to the Beach Bum inside. |
Guldovian Stitch | Another World: Is automatically gained when you recruit Mel, who can only be recruited if you chose to save Kid and then gave chase to Mel when she stole Kid's Elements. After retrieving your boat from Termina, return to Guldove and talk to Mel to get both her and the frame at once. |
Tropical Paradise | Another World: Is automatically gained if you choose not to save Kid. |
Valencian Cloth | Another World: Visit Marbule with a party consisting entirely of demi-humans and non-humans to get this frame. You must either have Serge in Lynx's body or be in New Game+ without Serge in the party. |
Infrared Vision | Home World: After recruiting Radius, head to Fossil Valley. The frame is inside a chest on the top screen. |
Monster's Mouth | Home World: When your party is turned into cats aboard the S.S. Zelbess, talk to the cat inside the ship's kitchen. |
Our Favorite Martian | Home World: First, you must recruit Starky. With the Star Fragment that you can retrieve from the El Nido Triangle, go to Sky Dragon Isle to find a chest on the plateau. It is empty, but you'll face Mega Starky in battle. After beating him and recruiting the alien, leave and return – the new fungus-based NPC here will give you the frame. |
Snakes and Orbs | Another World: A Prehysteric inside Gaea's Navel is hiding up a thick tree. Defeat it to get this frame. |
Quill and Papyrus | Another World: After returning Serge to his old body and restoring Home World's Marbule, head to Another World's Marbule and enter the Black Dragon's den. Toma XIV is here and will give you the frame. |
