Concrete Genie Dev And Sony Pictures Animation Co-Creating A New PS5 Game

Concrete Genie developer PixelOpus is hiring for a new, “unique project” which sees the studio working with Sony Pictures Animation.

This news comes from a job listing recently uploaded to Twitter by PixelOpus itself. According to the listing, PixelOpus is looking for a Principal Graphics Programmer to work on “a collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation.” The position will apparently specialize in the “graphics functionality of the PlayStation 5” and that responsibilities in the team will be diverse due to its smaller size.

For those unaware, Sony Pictures Animation is the animation studio behind a number of Sony Picture’s most popular animated films. These include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, Hotel Transylvania, and the recently released The Mitchells vs The Machines. Both PixelOpus and Sony Pictures Animation have been experimenting with unique art styles with their latest projects, so this joint project could result in something quite special.

The job listing doesn’t offer up any hints as to what this project might be, but knowing PixelOpus, it’ll at least be something that uses all of the PS5’s bells and whistles to their maximum potential. Concrete Genie was quite unique in that it had players use the controller’s touchpad to draw graffiti creatures and bring them to life. Seeing as the DualSense has a lot more gimmicks, we could see PixelOpus use the controller’s adaptive triggers or haptic feedback in some fun, creative ways.

As for what else Sony has on the horizon, head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst recently revealed details on the development of a number of upcoming Sony projects. According to Hulst, both Gran Turismo 7 and the next God of War game will be released on PS4 as well as PS5, the latter of which has unfortunately been delayed into 2022.

Hulst also gave us an update on Horizon Forbidden West after its recent State of Play gameplay trailer. Horizon Forbidden West is apparently still on track to launch this holiday season, although that date is not set in stone and the game could be pushed back if required.
