A modder has created a handheld version of the Nintendo Wii that is the exact same size as a Gameboy Color.
PlayStation and Xbox might be preparing for the next generation of console, but as always, Nintendo is happily, and successfully, doing its own thing. As has been the Nintendo way for a while now, its newest console – the Switch – has innovated the way in which gamers play their games. As the name of the console implies, the Switch allows players to alternate between playing games on a small handheld screen or a bigger TV one.
As forward-thinking as the Switch is, it has some work to do to become Nintendo’s best-selling console. That title belongs to the DS, while the Wii and the Game Boy also managed to sell more than 100 million units each. Those last two might be the peak of Nintendo’s innovation on a regular console and a handheld one, respectively.
So why not combine the best elements of the two to make a Nintendo super console? That’s what GingerOfMods decided to do, dubbing his creation the Wiiboy Color. GingerOfMods managed to trim down the Wii’s motherboard to a small enough size that he was able to fit it and everything else he needed to make the console handheld into a 3D-printed case. A case the exact same size as that of a Game Boy Color.
In fact, the only thing that makes the creation slightly larger than a Game Boy Color is the triggers on the back. The same ones that can be found on the top of Wii Remotes. Any and all Wii games can be played on the Wiiboy Color. However, since a disc is almost as big as the console itself, they have to be transferred onto a tiny USB drive that is built into GingerOfMods’ creation.
Since the Wiiboy Color is technically just a Wii but smaller, it comes with all the same features of the original console. That means its users can also play Gamecube titles on the console since the Wii is backward compatible. GingerOfMods plans to sell his creations and anyone interested in buying them should get in touch with the modder via his Instagram, Twitter, Gmail, or Discord.
