Dark Souls Fan Journals Their Journey Through Lordran

There are a lot of ways to play Dark Souls – going through the world, designing a build, exploring. Or you can modify a banana to make it a controller. People touch on all levels of extreme when it comes to FromSoftware's games, but one fan is taking a more relaxed and scenic approach for a change – they're journaling their playthrough.

The first page opens with a drawing of their character and some notes: "Instead of the Nexus in Demon's Souls, there seem to be these bonfires. Objective is to ring the bells." Scattered among the notes is a drawing of Velka's crow, the Asylum Demon, an Xbox controller, and some weapons. This is "the start."

Then you have the map. It's vertical, lending itself to Dark Souls' Metroidvania roots, and split into segments. The first is "Dark Map One" which shows the Undead Burg residing above Firelink Shrine as well as the graveyard just to the side. But there's also a paper sketch that's more practical with locked doors, bonfires, and other items of note.

The second entry opens with a map update. The parish is added with "Gargoyles?!", a red dragon, and the elevator. We see the perched mountains and the winding level design with an insight into how much this discovery is striking a chord with them: "Travel back to Firelink – mind blown!"

There are also new drawings of more enemies like the armoured boar and Black Knights, one of whom gave Cora a tough time. "After about an hour of banging my head against the wall with the Rabbit Knight, in that horrible small space, I finally tried to do the boss on the top of that tower." That boss is of course the Taurus Demon.

To celebrate their victory, they created a certificate for themselves that can be found just above Solaire who Cora met for the first time while journaling their experience. "When I first saw this armoured figure, I thought the worst. But he was a lovely character who wished me well on my journey."
