Dead or Alive designer Tomonobu Itagaki has announced his new company, Apex Game Studios, which is developing an NFT-oriented MMORPG called Warrior.
"My studio focuses on producing high-quality and immersive [triple-A] Web3.0 games," Itagaki wrote. "Warrior aims to solve the performance and security issues of GameFi 1.0 and achieve GameFi 2.0."
It's aiming to launch in Q1 2023 (thanks, Eurogamer), but the reaction so far hasn't been all that positive. Web3 encompasses blockchain and NFTs, crypto-based receipts for digital items like GIFs and artwork. While so many game developers and publishers are joining the racket, NFTs have been controversial given the environmental impact they have and with so many spawning from stolen artwork. They've proven unpopular with wider audiences, losing traction over the past year.
"Dude, why," one commenter wrote. "I am so sad right now," another added. "Oof. What a shame," someone chimed in. The general sentiment is disappointment, but the project is moving on. Warrior is being developed in Unreal Engine but not much is known about it aside from that.
We know it'll have "competition, battle, and exploration," as well as 100 monster types, just as with any other MMO. You can summon these monsters to assist in fights while, as is MMO tradition, there will be a trading system. However, this system will likely be baked into the blockchain and Web3.0 mechanics as it's described as letting you trade "almost all assets" through "Warrior Diamond Tokens." However, this is also tied to crafting and cosmetics.
But not every game designer is a fan of NFTs. Only last week, one dev tricked his way into a conference so he could talk about "why NFTs are a nightmare," saying that they diminish trust and aren't sustainable, hurting the future of the industry.
