Destiny 2 brought back Gjallarhorn, arguably the strongest Exotic weapon during the original Destiny's first year. It could melt bosses in the blink of an eye and turn fodder enemies into stardust. While it isn't as powerful as its D1Y1 counterpart, Gjallarhorn in Destiny 2 is still a great Exotic heavy for newcomers and returning players to chase.

The quest to obtain Gjallerhorn is really easy. If you follow the quest steps, it should be in your hands in about an hour. However, we want to give a good farming tip for obtaining Wolfpack Rounds and cover how you can get its Catalyst—something that's much more obscure to obtain than the Rocket Launcher itself. Let's quickly go over how you can obtain Gjallarhorn and its Exotic Catalyst.

And Out Fly The Wolves Quest Start

Gjallarhorn's Exotic quest, And Out Fly the Wolves, can be obtained by speaking to Xur at his Treasure Hoard. He'll have it on the second page of his vendor menu, located under the "Quests" tab. The quest will task you with speaking to Shaw Han. Don't worry; Shaw wasn't holding Gjallarhorn hostage this entire time.

Complete The Grasp of Avarice Dungeon

Shaw will tell you of some strange activity occurring in a loot cave at Skywatch. For this quest step, you'll need to complete the Grasp of Avarice dungeon. This can be completed at any difficulty setting, Legend or Master. Completing the dungeon will drop a Wolfpack Round, progressing to the next step.

If you haven't cleared the dungeon yet, check out our Grasp of Avarice dungeon guide. We'll show you how to clear each encounter and where to find every hidden chest.

Once you've finished the dungeon, speak to Shaw Han to advance the quest.

Collect Wolfpack Rounds

This step requires that you obtain seven Wolfpack Rounds, one of which you already own. Wolfpack Rounds drop from majors and bosses in the Cosmodrome. To get this done quickly, farm the Exodus Garden 2A Lost Sector. You can find it The Divide, a location directly behind the Cosmodrome spawn point. You'll get about one or two Wolfpack Rounds a run, so this step won't take very long to complete.

Speak To Shaw Han And Banshee-44

Technically two steps, you'll need to speak with Shaw Han then Banshee-44 to continue the quest. They basically tell you that the final piece of Gjallarhorn you need can be found in Exodus Garden 2A, the Lost Sector you've been farming this entire time.

Retrieve Gjallarhorn's Final Component

Banshee-44 tells you that the final component for Gjallarhorn is located in Exodus Garden 2A, a Lost Sector in The Divide. It takes a couple of minutes to clear, and the drop is guaranteed.

Return To Shaw Han's Camp

All that's left is to assemble Gjallarhorn. Travel to Shaw Han and enter the building behind him. Interact with some nearby storage crates to craft Gjallarhorn, arguably the most overpowered weapon during the original Destiny's first year. Yup, it really is that easy.

How To Obtain The Gjallarhorn Exotic Catalyst

Gjallarhorn's Exotic Catalyst is obtained by opening three hidden chests in the Grasp of Avarice dungeon. These chests can only be opened while you have at least one stack of Burdened by Riches, a debuff obtained by grabbing an Engram from a slain foe.

Note: The Gjallarhorn Catalyst chests do not spawn unless one person in your fireteam owns Gjallarhorn. Follow the quest steps above if you don't own it.

Chest #1: Entering The Loot Cave

  • Location: Right after descending into the loot cave
  • Vandal: Across from the chest

The first chest can be found right after you descend into the loot cave. The first Hive Acolyte you fight will be near a small metal structure. The raised platform on this structure has the chest you need. To open it, damage the Vandal major at the opposite end of the cave. A single melee hit will spawn an Engram.

Grab the Engram, then backtrack to the chest to open it, granting you one fragment. You'll need two more to obtain the Catalyst. Keep in mind that the fragments aren't actual items; they pop up as a text prompt on the bottom-left of your HUD.

Chest #2: Before The Phry'zhia Ogre

  • Location: The room preceding the Ogre boss
  • Vandal: Right after the red-lit staircase

After you climb up a red-lit staircase, you'll find a Vandal running into a storage room that leads to the next encounter. Melee the Vandal, then book it through the air vent. When you enter the next room, make a hard right on the first platform to find the chest hiding in a corner.

Chest #3: After Fallen Shield

  • Location: Fallen Shield encounter – the gravity lift that takes you to the final boss
  • Vandal: Above a waterfall on the east part of the area

For this chest, you must finish the Fallen Shield encounter. Before you ascend into the boss arena, you'll want to look for a waterfall directly in front of a Fallen base. If the location you face upon entering the encounter is north, this waterfall is to the east. Use the gravity lift from the central-most Fallen base, to reach this area. They'll be a Vandal roaming the area.

Grab an Engram from the Vandal, then use the gravity lift nearby to reach the central Fallen base once again. Climb up the central building—the one that typically houses a Scorch Cannon Vandal—to find the chest. Grabbing all three chests will grant the Exotic Catalyst for Gjallarhorn.
