BioWare has revealed that the new Dragon Age is ‘right in the middle of production’, increasing hopes that it could be released next year.
Talk of a new Dragon Age has been going on for a very long time now, with BioWare acknowledging its existence as far back as 2018, but with the development having first begun as early as 2015.
The project has been restarted twice though, the first time to add live service elements to it and the second time to remove them, so it’s really only existed in its current form for around two years.
During that period there’s been little in the way of official updates, but BioWare now claims that it is ‘right in the middle of production’, which suggests that it could be completed towards the end of 2023.
It also means that we could finally see some actual footage of the game, and get some explanation for what it really is, this year, although BioWare have made no promise of that.
The update was provided in a blog which also reveals that executive producer Christian Dailey has now left the company, the latest in a long line of high profile exits from the studio.
Mass Effect veteran Mac Walters will become Dragon Age’s new production director, with Corrine Busche now installed as game director. Benoit Houle, who has worked on every one of the previous Dragon Age games, is now director of product development.
Although only hardcore fans will know those names the blog’s primary purpose seems to be to assure fans that there’s still plenty of series veterans left at BioWare, despite the constant departures.
It may also be a response to rumours last week from Jeff Grubb, that Dragon Age would arrive within the next 18 months – although he subsequently clarified he meant no earlier than 18 months, which this new blog essentially confirms.
There was also a small update on the next Mass Effect, which, like the new Dragon Age, still doesn’t have an official name.
The team, led by Mike Gamble, is said to be ‘actively prototyping new ideas and experiences’. This implies the game is a lot further off than Dragon Age, with the blog itself admitting that ‘AAA next gen games take a long time to make’.
