While Dying Light 2 features human enemies, you will mainly be dealing with hordes of infected. These zombies are all over the city and become way more active during the night. Besides your typical Biters and Virals, you'll sometimes encounter special types of infected as well.

These special infected were created on January 6, 2025, during the event known as "Black Monday," when tons of chemical bombs fell into the city. The idea was to use the THV-GenMod (a chemical compound that accelerated the decay of the infected DNA and caused them to die) to bomb the city and get rid of the infected once and for all. However, things didn't go according to plan. The bombs killed hundreds of people and mutated the infected into special types. This guide includes all the different types of infected featured in Dying light 2 and how to deal with them.

Virals

Virals are a fairly common type of infected in the game. They have just recently turned and, because of that, Virals are relatively fast and can climb buildings with ease.

Virals will sometimes perform power attacks where they launch at you, making you fall to the grown; dodging them is the best way to deal with that. You can also just attack them with the different weapons available in the game.

Biters

Alongside Virals, Biters are the most common type of infected found in the game. These guys have been infected for a long time, their bodies are rotting, and they move really slow, so handling them it's fairly easy. A couple of quick attacks or kicking them off rooftops will do. The only moment when a Biter is a real threat is when you stumbled upon a group of them.

Another good way to deal with biter is to sneak past them when they're dormant and kill them stealthily. Some Biters are toxic, meaning they have around them a cloud of green gas that causes poison damage to the player.

Howlers

Like most types of infected, these guys will come out at night. You can easily spot them because their chests glow, and they have a special icon over their heads. Howlers won't attack you on sight, but they'll emit a high-pitched scream that'll alert nearby infected, initiating a level one chase.

To deal with them, either move fast or use stealth to avoid being detected or kill them first with ranged weapons.

Bolters

Bolters are incredibly fast, won't attack the player, and will flee upon seeing them. You'll easily spot Bolters because they have glowing parts on their body and leave glowing footprints behind.

You don't have to deal with a Bolter if you don't want to, but they'll usually have high-level loot on them if you manage to kill one.

Banshees

Banshees were once human females, as seen by the dress and pieces of jewelry you can see them wearing. Not only that, but their hands have transformed into deadly claws.

Banshees are incredibly agile and acrobatic, being able to jump really high in seconds; this makes them look as if they're flying. They attack by launching at the player and can even get on top of other zombies to use them as jumping boards. The best way to deal with them is to dodge their attacks and then hit them when they're "recharging."

Spitters

Spitters are a special type of infected that have the ability to spit yellow acid phlegm out of their chest, taking huge chunks of your health.

They are deadly from afar but try and get close to them to kill them with melee attacks.

Bombers

These zombies look and sound silly, but they're incredibly dangerous. Bombers are infected that will explode near the player and deal a lot of damage. To deal with Bombers, don't let them get close to you and attack them with ranged weapons as they'll explode on contact.

Goons

Goons are the big boys of Dying Light 2, these infected are massive, and they'll hit you with a big hammer that's attached to one of their arms. A hit from a Goon can easily take a huge amount of your health and will push you back. Luckily, Goons are extremely slow, so you can lure them to one side and then run in the opposite direction.

Volatile

Volatiles are, without a doubt, the deadliest infected in the game. They're even considered the apex predators among the infected. These zombies are built differently and have incredible speed and strength, making them an incredibly dangerous threat.

The best way to deal with Volatiles is not to deal with them at all. When you see one (or three), avoid it and use stealth to sneak past them. If you must engage with a Volatile, use the UV flashlight to weaken them and get close.

Revenant

These are the most unique-looking infected in the game; they have something growing on their back that kind of looks like petrified wings. This type of infected is slow but can buff surrounding zombies by creating a toxic mist that can also harm the player. They also have the ability to summon infected, most likely biters.

You are likely to find these creatures at GRE anomaly sites. To deal with them, first deal with the infected they summon and then dodge the phlegm it will shoot at you. If you have it, use the UV flashlight to weaken them and get close so you can attack.
