Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade PS5 upgrade gets new Yuffie episode

Sony’s State of Play event has revealed, not Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2, but a free upgrade for the PS5 and a DLC expansion featuring Yuffie.

Despite all the rumours, there was no GTA 5 or other major new announcements during Thursday night’s State of Play livestream and nor was there the rumoured reveal of the second chapter of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but there was the next best thing.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is an enhanced version of the original PlayStation 4 game, which was released, to wide acclaim, last spring.

The upgrade itself, with improved graphics, load times, and DualSense support is free, but once you have it you’ll then have the option to buy an exclusive new episode featuring Yuffie from the original PlayStation 1 game.

‘Play as ninja Yuffie Kisaragi as she infiltrates the shadowy Shinra corporation to steal a powerful Materia and restore glory to her homeland’, reads the official blurb.

‘Play alongside new characters and enjoy an expanded gameplay experience featuring multiple new combat and gameplay additions. This adventure brings new perspective to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake story that cannot be missed.’

It’s not entirely clear, but the Yuffie episode appears to be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, but then by the time the series finishes, which will take at least another two games, it may be PlayStation 5-only by then anyway.

The PlayStation 5 version will feature improved textures, lighting, and fog effects, as well as two game modes that prioritise either 4K resolution or 60 frames per second action.

Also added to the PlayStation 5 version will be a photo mode and support for the DualSense controller and its haptic feedback. You’ll also be able to carry over your PlayStation 4 save to the PlayStation 5.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be released on June 10, so not too long to wait either.

The reveal was by far the biggest news during the State of Play, but a lot of the already announced games looked very good as well, especially Housemarque’s Returnal, the already much-fancied Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, and Deathloop with it’s marvellous new Bond style theme tune.

The only genuinely new game though was Sifu by indie developer Sloclap. It’s a PlayStation 4 and 5 console exclusive (so it’s also on PC) and while it wasn’t entirely clear what was going on the martial arts action looked solid, just as you’d expect from the makers of Absolver.

It’s out this year too, as were all the games featured, including EA’s Knockout City, Solar Ash from the makers of Hyper Light Drifter, Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach, and Oddworld: Soulstorm (which was given a release date of April 6).
