Final Fantasy VII Co-Director Promises The Story Won’t Change That Much

The Final Fantasy VII Remake took a number of liberties with the original game, expanding upon some ideas encountered back then, and even adding some completely new ones. However, the game’s co-director Yoshimori Kitase had already stated that the game would not be completely different from the original.

An interview in the 750-page book Ultimania that accompanies the game, translated by Twitter user @aitaikimochi, quotes Kitase as saying that, “We’re not drastically changing the story and making it into something completely different than the original. Even though it’s a Remake, please assume the story of FFVII will continue as FFVII always has.”

-HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD-

One notable addition to the Remake are the Whispers – spectral apparitions that you encounter throughout the game (that didn’t exist in the original), and towards the end, Red XIII explains that the Whispers seem to exist to make certain the events of the game transpire as they’re destined to.

The changes that were included – like the whole hinting towards the game actually taking place in an alternate timeline – may have an effect on the future of the franchise. But there’s no confirmation for that as of right now, so we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled for that sense of pride and accomplishment when you figure out what’s different and how it fits in with the new narrative.
