First Halo Infinite gameplay shows off Master Chief’s new tricks

343 Industries and Xbox Game Studios debuted gameplay footage from Halo Infinite, the next game in the long-running Halo franchise, during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase on Thursday. From the trailer shown during the event, Halo Infinite looks a lot like Halo: Combat Evolved, with plenty of familiar weapons and enemies — plus a new gameplay twist.

It’s the first time we’ve seen any actual footage from Halo Infinite. Specifically, 343 Industries showed a clip where Master Chief and the Pelican pilot — who is very angry — from the game’s 2019 cinematic trailer land on a shattered Halo ring.

Typical Halo chaos ensues, but now Master Chief’s got a grappling hook. Players will recognize a bunch of stuff in the trailer, from the familiar enemies to recognizable weapons and Warthog driving. There’s also a reference to The Banished, a group of alien species that rebelled from the Covenant and were featured in Halo Wars 2.

Halo Infinite is expected to be larger than the previous two Halo games combined. Players will be able to experience an expansive world that’s explored differently than in previous Halo games.

Halo Infinite is expected to pick up where Halo 5: Guardians left off, sometime after UNSC Infinity — a massive carrier ship — escapes Cortona (who’s gone bad and is leading a bunch of AIs) through emergency slipspace.

Halo 5 was the second game in the Reclaimer saga, which kicked off with Halo 4 in 2012. Halo Infinite’s been described as a “spiritual reboot” for the franchise. Last year, 343 Industries described the game as “a new chapter and challenge for the Chief,” and a “perfect starting point of new players.” However, the developer said at that time that Infinite will still “respect and continue threads that led to this point.”

Halo Infinite will be released alongside the Xbox Series X this holiday season.
